background: prolongation of qt interval is one of the most important abnormalities in cardiovascular system of cirrhotic patients. the aim of this survey was determination of propranolol effect on frequency adjusted qt interval (qtc). materials and methods: thirty six cirrhotic patients (m/f=20/16, mean age:56 â± 3.8 years) and 40 healthy age and sex matched controls (m/f=25/15, mean age: 58 â±...
Results The risk of incident stroke in study participants with prolonged QTcFram was almost 3 times the risk in those with normal QTcFram (hazard ratio [HR] [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 2.88 [2.12 to 3.92], p 0.0001). After adjustment for demographics (age, race, and sex), traditional stroke risk factors (antihypertensive medication use, systolic blood pressure, current smoking, diabetes, le...
OBJECTIVE Our aim was to assess whether severe hypoglycemic attacks were cross-sectionally associated with abnormalities of the QTc interval in type 1 diabetic patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The study included 3,248 type 1 diabetic patients from the EURODIAB IDDM Complications Study. Severe hypoglycemia was defined as an attack serious enough to require the help of another person. A co...
The QT interval in the electrocardiogram is the expression of ventricular repolarisation, it is variable in the general population and highly dependent upon heart frequency; therefore, in clinical practice, the QTc index is used, to correct for heart frequency through the well-known Bazzett’s correction formula (QTc=QT/ RR0.5) for heart frequencies below 90 bpm. The QTc index is considered norm...
We report a case of torsade de pointes after intravenous amiodarone and concurrent hypokalemia. Despite treatment cessation and correction of electrolyte abnormalities, excessive QTc prolongation was noted, which persisted for 14 days. This prolonged course for QTc normalization may be attributed to the high rate of amiodarone loading and concurrent electrolyte disturbances coupled with possibl...
Ventricular fibrillation developed in a 19 year old woman taking the antihistamine astemizole. She was successfully resuscitated. QTc prolongation was found and persisted despite withdrawal of the drug. Aggravation of congenital long QTc syndrome by astemizole is postulated. More caution should be exercised with the use of this drug.
STUDY OBJECTIVE There have been 15 published cases of probable pentamidine-induced torsade de pointes (TdP). A prospective analysis of this complication of therapy is valuable considering the high frequency of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in the AIDS population, and the role of pentamidine in its therapy. DESIGN Open, nonrandomized, prospective study of HIV-infected patients receiving intra...
In concentration-QTc modeling, oscillatory functions have been used to characterize biological rhythms in QTc profiles. Fitting such functions is not always feasible because it requires sufficient electrocardiograph sampling. In this study, drug concentration and QTc data were simulated using a published biological QTc model (oscillatory functions). Then, linear mixed-effect models and the biol...
BACKGROUND Arsenic exposure from drinking water has been associated with heart disease; however, underlying mechanisms are uncertain. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the association between a history of arsenic exposure from drinking water and the prolongation of heart rate-corrected QT (QTc), PR, and QRS intervals. METHOD We conducted a study of 1,715 participants enrolled at baseline from the Heal...
We present the case of a 49-year-old male patient with prosthetic mitral valve endocarditis associated with QT prolongation and torsades de pointes. He was asymptomatic until the end of January 2012, when he was admitted to our hospital emergency unit because of syncope, fever, and suspicion of endocarditis. Cardiologic evaluation was requested and the transthoracic (TTE) and transesophageal (T...
