A case of aortic valve replacement with a Björk-Shiley disc prosthesis in a patient with sickle-cell trait is presented. Six months after operation red cell survival was not significantly reduced. On theoretical and clinical grounds it is concluded that the presence of sickle-cell trait does not contribute to late postoperative haemolysis after heart valve replacement.

Although classic and standard procedure for patients with ascending Aorta aneurysm with Sever aortic Regurgitation is Bentall surgery but in some selected cases this complex surgery was not performed with different reason like advanced age and coexisting comorbidity involving renal and hepatic and lung Function. In our cases 75 years old man with chronic renal failure ( Cr= 3.2 ) who was known ...

Anticoagulant therapy is indicated during pregnancy for the prevention and treatment of VTE; for the prevention and treatment of systemic embolism in patients with mechanical heart valves; and, often in combination with aspirin, for the prevention of pregnancy loss in women with APLAs or thrombophilia and previous pregnancy losses. Several questions concerning anticoagulant therapy remain unans...

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation, as well as interventional mitral valve repair, offer reasonable therapeutic options for high-risk surgical patients. We report a rare case of early post-interventional aortic valve prosthesis migration to the left ventricular outflow tract, with paravalvular leakage and causing severe mitral valve regurgitation. Initial successful interventional mitral v...

We describe a woman with gestational age of 20 weeks, who was submitted to a complex procedure. She underwent replacement of the biological mitral and aortic valve, both by biological prosthesis, valvuloplasty of the tricuspid valve, as well as thrombectomy of the left atrium. Extracorporeal circulation (ECC) was used during 105 minutes. The patient was discharged from hospital in good health c...

Surgical repair of the mitral valve was undertaken in two young female patients during the active phase of bacterial endocarditis to eradicate persistent infection. Operation resulted in rapid resolution of infection with good haemodynamic results in both patients. A mitral valve prosthesis has the disadvantage for children of needing replacement because of growth, and for young women of leadin...

Half a century ago, replacement of diseased heart valves with an artificial prosthesis ushered a new era in the cardiovascular medicine. New solutions to complex problems frequently create new problems of their own that require innovative solutions. Paraprosthetic regurgitation through an opening between the prosthesis and the annulus of the valve is one such challenge. Although much less frequ...

Infective Endocarditis is an extremely rare etiology of sinus of Valsalva-right atrial fistulas, abnormal connections between the aorta and the right atrium. We report the case of a 21-year-old female patient with native aortic valve Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis complicated by sinus of Valsalva abscess perforation associated with an acute heart block, an aorto-right atrial fistula, severe...

ASBTRACT Introduction: The interest in developing a prosthetic heart tri-laeflet valve is based on the durability of mechanical prosthesis; the good hemodynamic performance of bio-prosthesis due to the central flow, its perfect closure, the negligible thrombogenic index, and the negligible perception of its presence by the user. Objectives: Develop a mathematical model of a fourth generation pr...

BACKGROUND The long-term results of aortic valve replacement (AVR; n=737) with bileaflet mechanical prosthesis (MP) or Carpentier-Edwards Perimount bioprostheses (BP) were evaluated in different age groups. METHODS AND RESULTS: Since 1981, a total of 737 prostheses (424 bileaflet MP vs. 313 BP) were implanted for AVR in 278 patients aged ≥70 years (79 MP vs. 199 BP), in 191 patients aged 60-69 ...
