The light and electron microscopic features of pigmented cells in the adult dog pineal gland have been described. The presence of pigmented cells was a constant characteristic of the dog pineal gland, though wide variations in the amount of pigment could be found among different animals. Conversely, the localisation of pigmented cells was very constant on the basal surface of the proximal regio...

MR brain scans of 672 consecutive patients were examined prospectively to determine the incidence of high-signal pineal glands on T2-weighted images. The scans were obtained on either a 0.15-T or 0.5-T unit. This finding was present in 29 patients, none of whom had hydrocephalus or symptoms of a pineal mass. A CT scan was available in 17 of these cases and none of these demonstrated a solid pin...

Castrated male and intact female pigs were kept under natural photoperiodic and temperature conditions and were killed over a 24 h period in either May (under long days) or in December (under short days). Neither the pineal norepinephrine (NE) concentration nor the melatonin content rose at night; likewise, neither the activities of N-acetyltransferase (NAT) nor hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferas...

A 59-year-old male patient had 5-month history of gait disturbance and memory impairment. His initial brain computed tomography scan showed 3.5×2.8 cm sized mass with high density in the pineal region. The tumor was hypointense on T2 weighted magnetic resonance images and hyperintense on T1 weighted magnetic resonance images with heterogenous enhancement of central portion. The tumor was totall...

The effect of a single high-intensity light pulse with a duration of 1 ms on nighttime pineal activity of male Sprague-Dawley rats was investigated. 10 minutes after light exposure pineal N-actyltransferase activity and melatonin content were significantly reduced. These results show that the rat pineal is capable of responding to very short light flashes of high intensity.

The pineal hormone, melatonin, has been reported to be synthesized in the retina by the enzyme, hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT). Several laboratories have suggested that melatonin may be involved in photoreceptor outer segment disc shedding, photomechanical movements, and neuromodulation, but the cellular location of the retinal synthesizing enzymes has not been determined yet. Antise...

The aim of this study was to compare the circadian control of melatonin production in teleosts. To do so, the effects of ophthalmectomy on circulating melatonin rhythms were studied along with ex vivo pineal culture in six different teleosts. Results strongly suggested that the circadian control of melatonin production could have dramatically changed with at least three different systems being ...

Pineal hemorrhage only occurs in rare cases, and this known to have several different causes such as germ cell tumors, pineal cysts and vascular malformations, including the cavernous malformations. Pineal cavernous malformations are extremely rare: to date only fifteen cases have been reported worldwide. Although the diagnosis of pineal cavernous malformation is not easy because of the extreme...

The circadian rhythm in melatonin production in mammals is regulated by a suprachiasmatic (SCN) leads to spinal cord leads to pineal circuit. In the present investigation the possible participation of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) in the SCN leads to spinal cord segment of this circuit was investigated in the rat. Bilateral lesions of the PVN area were produced and one t...

Pineal cysts of the third ventricle presenting with acute obstructive hydrocephalus due to internal cystic hemorrhage are a rare clinical entity. The authors report a case of a 61-year-old man taking antiplatelet medication who suffered from a hemorrhagic pineal cyst and was treated with endoscopic surgery. One month prior to treatment, the patient was diagnosed with a brainstem infarction and ...
