The choice of particle shape representation is critical in the accuracy of the simulations of real granular materials. Here we present a method to simulate particle shape using polygonal particles. The method reproduces shear bands using different boundary conditions: confining walls, floppy boundaries and periodic boundary conditions.

agriculture as one of the major economic sectors of iran, has an important role in gross domestic production by providing about 14% of gdp. this study attempts to forecast the value of the agriculture gdp using periodic autoregressive model (par), as the new seasonal time series techniques. to address this aim, the quarterly data were collected from march 1988 to july 1989. the collected data w...

We demonstrate how the Laplace operator can be combined with a stochastic jump process to describe the evolution of a polymer network. Growth processes in polymer networks can proceed through the transfer of rather large oligomeric subunits from a pool of soluble molecules into the laments forming the network. In such a situation stochastic jump processes are a natural tool for the description ...

Periodic structures are of great importance in electromagnetics due to their wide range of applications such as frequency selective surfaces (FSS), electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures, periodic absorbers, meta-materials, and many others. The aim of this book is to develop efficient computational algorithms to analyze the scattering properties of various electromagnetic periodic structures ...

A finite strain micromechanical model is generalized in order to incorporate the effect of evolving damage in the metallic and polymeric phases of unidirectional composites. As a result, it is possible to predict the response of composites with ductile and brittle phases undergoing large coupled inelastic-damage and viscoelastic-damage deformations, respectively. For inelastic composites, both ...

The finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbell model consists of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equation for the solvent and the Fokker–Planck equation for the polymer distribution. In such a model, the polymer elongation cannot exceed a limit m0 which yields all interesting features of solutions near this limit. This work is concerned with the sharpness of boundary conditions in t...

Since the development of early versions of material requirements planning (MRP) systems, it has been known that a weak link in this technique is the failure to consider the available capacity at the time the lot sizes for individual items are calculated. Ignoring the available capacity may result in infeasible production plans i.e., those that can only be accomplished with the use of overtime. ...

A symmetry-adapted version of the Maxwell rule appropriate to periodic bar-and-joint frameworks is obtained, and is further extended to body-and-joint systems. The treatment deals with bodies and forces that are replicated in every unit cell, and uses the point group isomorphic to the factor group of the space group of the framework. Explicit expressions are found for the numbers and symmetries...

Acta Crystallographica Section A: Foundations of Crystallography covers theoretical and fundamental aspects of the structure of matter. The journal is the prime forum for research in diffraction physics and the theory of crystallographic structure determination by diffraction methods using X-rays, neutrons and electrons. The structures include periodic and aperiodic crystals, and non-periodic d...

We compare an inverse problem approach to parameter estimation with homogenization techniques for characterizing the electrical response of composite dielectric materials in the time domain. We first consider an homogenization method, based on the periodic unfolding method, to identify the dielectric response of a complex material with heterogeneous micro-structures which are described by spati...
