Since the discovery of penicillin, Penicillium has become one of the most attractive fungal genera for the production of bioactive molecules. Marine-derived Penicillium has provided numerous excellent pharmaceutical leads over the past decades. In this review, we focused on the cytotoxic metabolites * (* Cytotoxic potency was referred to five different levels in this review, extraordinary (IC50...

A large number of people work with garbage collection, and exposure to microorganisms is considered an occupational health problem. However, knowledge on microbial exposure at species level is limited. The aim of the study was to achieve knowledge on waste collectors' exposure to airborne inhalable fungal and bacterial species during waste collection with focus on the transport of airborne micr...

This section looks back to some ground-breaking contributions to public health, reproducing them in their original form and adding a commentary on their significance from a modern-day perspective. To complement the theme of this month’s Bulletin, Sir Richard Sykes reviews the 1929 paper by Alexander Fleming on the antibacterial action of cultures of a penicillium. The original paper is reproduc...

Three macrocyclic polylactones have been isolated from Penicillium verruculosum. Two were found to be novel and the third to be identical with NG-012(1). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. A full assignment of 1H- and 13C-resonances in acetone-d6 are given for all three compounds. The compounds show antifungal activity.

Two distinct partitiviruses, Penicillium stoloniferum viruses S and F, can be isolated from the fungus Penicillium stoloniferum. The bisegmented dsRNA genomes of these viruses are separately packaged in icosahedral capsids containing 120 coat-protein subunits. We used transmission electron cryomicroscopy and three-dimensional image reconstruction to determine the structure of Penicillium stolon...

School buildings typically serve a number of functions simultaneously, owing to which they seem to be especially exposed to the expansion of fungi with wide enzymatic capabilities, including fungi of the genus Penicillium. In total, 34 isolates belonging to 20 species were obtained within two schools. The most frequently isolated species included: Penicillium chrysogenum, P. waksmanii, and P. c...

Penicillium marneffei, a dimorphic fungus is a rare opportunistic pathogen. It is known to cause infection in immunocompromised patients and recently its occurrence in AIDS patients has been well-documented. Disease with Penicillium marneffei is even rarer among previously healthy individuals. The disease is endemic in Southeast Asia and China. Recognition of this rare disease is important beca...

Complete mitochondrial genome of the acid-tolerant fungus Penicillium ShG4C, isolated from oxidized sediments of an abandoned polymetallic mine site, has been sequenced using high-throughput sequencing approach. The mitochondrial genome represents a circular DNA molecule with size of 26,725 bp. It encodes a usual set of mitochondrial genes, including 15 protein coding genes, large and small rib...
