Recently the prevalence of strains of penicillinase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) in the Netherlands has increased. A study of demographic and clinical data from patients with gonorrhoea due to PPNG strains, and of the biological characteristics of the strains isolated in Rotterdam, show that Asian strains of PPNG seem at present to be endemic in the Netherlands. Spectinomycin was foun...

We describe the development of the Australian gonococcal surveillance programme from February 1979 to July 1982. Participants in the programme were the major public health laboratories in each state, which perform quantitative sensitivity tests on about 5400 strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae yearly. Participating laboratories conducted sensitivity tests by a standardised technique which is descr...

The in vitro sensitivity of 104 isolates ofNeisseria gonorrhoeae to six antimicrobial agents was tested. More than50% ofthe isolates produced penicillinase. Ofthose that did not produce penicillinase, 26% were resistant (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)) > 0 5 mg/i), and 68% showed a decreased sentitivity for penicillin G (0-06 < MIC < 0-25 mg/i). Twenty six per cent and 50% ofthe strains...

The presentation of enzymes on viral scaffolds has beneficial effects such as an increased enzyme loading and a prolonged reusability in comparison to conventional immobilization platforms. Here, we used modified tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) nanorods as enzyme carriers in penicillin G detection for the first time. Penicillinase enzymes were conjugated with streptavidin and coupled to TMV rods by ...

Twelve methods for the demonstration of bacterial penicillinase production by strains of Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus aureus are compared, and their suitability for routine clinical laboratory use is evaluated. The acidometric agar plate method is recommended.

The activities of penicillinase inhibitor, KA-107 extracted from culture filtrates of Streptomyces gedanensis ATCC 4880, were studied by using penicillin-resistant S. aureus FS-1277 and by means of in vitro and in vivo tests.
