We propose a non parametric quality control strategy based on the three way method STATIS and convex hull peeling for monitoring batch processes with constant or variable duration. The method is illustrated on a simulated data set and on a real one.
We study variational models for flexural beams and plates interacting with a rigid substrate through an adhesive layer. The general structure of the minimizers is investigated and some properties characterizing the behavior of the systems in dependence of the load and the material stiffnesses are discussed.
The asymptotic behaviour at late times of inhomogeneous axion-dilaton cosmologies is investigated. The space-times considered here admit two abelian space-like Killing vectors. These space-times evolve towards an anisotropic universe containing gravitational radiation. Furthermore, a peeling-off behaviour of the Weyl tensor and the antisymmetric tensor field strength is found. The relation to t...
In this paper I propose a real-time method for the detection of hexagonal tiles arranged in an irregular lattice. The method exploits the geometric properties of hexagons to aid detection. The recognition algorithm works by detecting objects on the boundary and peeling them away possibly exposing further internal objects. The algorithm terminates when no further objects can be detected.
The slow motion of a crack line is studied via an experiment in which sheets of paper are split into two halves in a "peel-in-nip" (PIN) geometry under a constant load, in creep. The velocity-force relation is exponential. The dynamics of the fracture line exhibits intermittency, or avalanches, which are studied using acoustic emission. The energy statistics is a power law, with the exponent be...
Transfer printing by kinetically switchable adhesion to an elastomeric stamp shows promise as a powerful micromanufacturing method to pickup microstructures and microdevices from the donor substrate and to print them to the receiving substrate. This can be viewed as the competing fracture of two interfaces. This paper examines the mechanics of competing fracture in a model transfer printing sys...
Society and some healthcare professionals often marginalise pregnant women who take illicit substances. Midwives who care for these women are often viewed as working on the edge of society. This research aimed to examine the lived experiences of midwives who care for pregnant women who take illicit drugs. A phenomenological study informed by Heidegger, Gadamer and Merleau-Ponty was chosen to fr...
We study the crack-front fingering instability of an elastic adhesive tape that is peeled off a solid substrate. Our analysis is based on an energy approach using fracture mechanics and scaling laws and provides simple physical explanations for (i) the fact that the wavelength depends only on the thickness of the adhesive film and (ii) the threshold of the instability, and (iii) additionally es...
Biological flows over surfaces and interfaces can result in accumulation hotspots or depleted voids of microorganisms in natural environments. Apprehending the mechanisms that lead to such distributions is essential for understanding biofilm initiation. Using a systematic framework, we resolve the dynamics and statistics of swimming microbes within flowing films, considering the impact of confi...
We consider the dynamics of an elastic sheet lubricated by the flow of a thin layer of fluid that separates it from a rigid wall. By considering long wavelength deformations of the sheet, we derive an evolution equation for its motion, accounting for the effects of elastic bending, viscous lubrication, and body forces. We then analyze various steady and unsteady problems for the sheet, such as ...
