We describe a simple one-person card game, patience sorting. Its analysis leads to a broad circle of ideas linking Young tableaux with the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation via the Schensted correspondence. A recent highlight of this area is the work of Baik-Deift-Johansson which yields limiting probability laws via hard analysis of Toeplitz determinants.

We investigate partitioning of integer sequences into heapable subsequences (previously defined and established by Mitzenmacher et al. [BHMZ11]). We show that an extension of patience sorting computes the decomposition into a minimal number of heapable subsequences (MHS). We connect this parameter to an interactive particle system, a multiset extension of Hammersley’s process, and investigate i...
In personalized queues, information at the level of individuals – customers or servers – is affecting system dynamics. Such information is becoming increasingly accessible, directly or statistically, as exemplified by personalized/precision medicine (customers) or call-center workforce management (servers). In the present work, we take advantage of personalized information about customers, spec...
Motivated by applications in call center management, we propose a framework based on empirical process techniques for inference about the waiting time and patience distribution in multiserver queues with abandonment. The framework rigorises heuristics based on survival analysis of independent and identically distributed observations by allowing correlated successive waiting times. Assuming a re...
Past research has regularly linked the experience of affect to increased impatience and, thereby, decreased self-control. Given emerging work identifying the emotion gratitude as a fairly unique affective state capable of enhancing, rather than inhibiting, patience, the present study examined the association between chronically elevated gratitude and individual differences in temporal discounti...
This study sheds light on the relationship between cognition and patience by documenting that correlation cognitive abilities delay discounting is weaker for same group of individuals if choices are incentivized. conjectures higher effort, which induces involvement system, moderates cognition. For 107 participants drawn from adult population in Tbilisi, this examines various measures ability pa...
This study aims to examine the role of resilience and patience on stress level experienced by young mothers during Covid-19 pandemic. is a quantitative correlational research using 3 instruments in set questionnaire that is: developed researcher, Pandemic-Related Perceived Stress Scale (PRPSSC) Campo-Arias colleagues. The participants were 44 who have 1st- 2nd-grader children Pasirbitung villag...
Abstract This article addresses the origins and nature of fad through a case study ‘Dolly Varden’ dress. The gown originated in 1770s as ‘polonaise’ among continental aristocracy, experienced minor revival 1840s when Dolly Varden, character Charles Dickens’s novel Barnaby Rudge (1841) was depicted wearing it. But it did not become until 1870s, after Dickens-owned painting sold re-entered public...
