the immunomodulatory activity of cod liver oil (clo) was evaluated by mice lethality test, carbon clearance assay, neutrophil adhesion test, cyclophosphamide-induced neutropenia, indirect haemagglutination test and effect on serum immunoglobulin levels. clo was administered orally at a dose of 0.5 g/kg or 1 g/kg body weight. in mice lethality test, low dose of clo (0.5 g/kg, po) produced 40% de...

Fowlpox (FP) is a serious disease in chickens caused by Fowlpox virus (FPV). One method currently used to control FPV is vaccination followed by confirmation that antibody titres are protective using the indirect haemagglutination assay (IHA). The direct haemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay is not done because most FPV strains do not agglutinate chicken red blood cells (RBCs). A novel FPV st...

The aim of this project was to find out if influenza virus were involved in causing upper respiratory disease among susceptible people. One hundred and forty threat washings were collected from the patients living in Karaj, Tehran, and Mashhad during autumn and winter seasons in 1993. Sixty samples (43%) belonged to men and the rest were from women. All samples were inoculated into the amniot...

In the course of our earlier investigations (Svartz, 1956a, b; Svartz and Schlossmann, 1953a, b, 1954, 1955, 1956) it was found that the cold precipitable protein fraction of serum from patients with active rheumatoid arthritis was able to agglutinate sheep erythrocytes sensitized with rabbit anti-sheep amboceptor. However, the haemagglutination titres of unfractionated sera, previously absorbe...

Serological test based on IHA (Indirect Haemagglutination Method) was performed in 100 cases of hepatic abscess. The test was 100% sensitive and 94% specific. The cut off point of antibody titer between normal population and patients with invasive amoebiasis was 1:128. Antibody titer in amoebic liver abscess was 1:5242 +/- 2795. A significant (P less than 0.001) correlation was found between to...

An automated technique for measuring haemagglutination kinetics is described. Equipment used in this test is very simple and already present in most blood transfusion centres. This method may be used with advantage to differentiate homozygous and heterozygous subjects in Rhesus, MNSs, and Kell systems, and to study antigen variations, especially in genetic investigations.
