The solid state track detector of celluloid films (cellulose nitrate+camphor 25% an weight) using etching technique is suitable for low energy alpha particle detection . The critical rate of energy loss for track formation in celluloid films is determined as 1 .3 MeV/mg•Ecm2. Irradiated samples are etched in NaOH (6 N) solution at 46•Ž for 10 minutes . The etched tracks are observed under a vie...

This is a novel approach for people detection and tracking in particle filtering framework. This algorithm uses people detectors and online trained, instance-specific classifiers as graded observation model. This algorithm robustly tracks moving people in complex scenes. This algorithm does not rely on background modeling and operates entirely in 2D.

Magnetic particles are widely used as signal labels in a variety of biological sensing applications, such as molecular detection and related strategies that rely on ligand-receptor binding. In this review, we explore the fundamental concepts involved in designing magnetic particles for biosensing applications and the techniques used to detect them. First, we briefly describe the magnetic proper...

Advances in cryoEM and single-particle reconstruction have led to results at increasingly high resolutions. However, to sustain continuing improvements in resolution it will be necessary to increase the number of particles included in performing the reconstructions. Manual selection of particles, even when assisted by computer preselection, is a bottleneck that will become significant as single...

BACKGROUND When healthy subjects track a moving target, "catch-up" saccades are triggered to compensate for the non-perfect tracking gain. The evaluation of the pursuit and/or saccade kinematics requires that saccade and pursuit components be separated from the eye movement trace. A similar situation occurs when analyzes eye movements of patients that could contain eye drifts between saccades. ...

We further work on detecting errors in postpositional particle usage by learners of Korean by improving the training data and developing a complete pipeline of particle selection. We improve the data by filtering non-Korean data and sampling instances to better match the particle distribution. Our evaluation shows that, while the data selection is effective, there is much work to be done with p...

In a recent study, we showed that heavy ion irradiation of human fibroblasts leads to an extremely localized nuclear response of the CDKN1A (p21) protein (1). The number of CDKN1A foci per cell nucleus after heavy-ion irradiation suggested a direct correlation with the number of particle traversals and therefore also a spatial correlation between foci and particle traversals. However, this conc...

Currently, laser fluence calibration is typically required for quantitative measurement of particle concentration in photoacoustic imaging. Here, we present a calibration-free method to quantify the absolute particle concentration by statistically analyzing photoacoustic signals. The proposed method is based on the fact that Brownian motion induces particle count fluctuation in the detection vo...

The next decade will bring massive new data sets from experiments of the direct detection of weakly interacting massive particle dark matter. Mapping the data sets to the particle-physics properties of dark matter is complicated not only by the considerable uncertainties in the dark-matter model, but by its poorly constrained local distribution function (the ‘‘astrophysics’’ of dark matter). I ...

Orthopoxvirus species like cowpox, vaccinia and monkeypox virus cause zoonotic infections in humans worldwide. Infections often occur in rural areas lacking proper diagnostic infrastructure as exemplified by monkeypox, which is endemic in Western and Central Africa. While PCR detection requires demanding equipment and is restricted to genome detection, the evidence of virus particles can comple...
