BACKGROUND Exposure to pesticides and industrial toxins are implicated in cardiovascular disease. Paraquat (PAR) is a toxic chemical widely used as an herbicide in developing countries and described as a major suicide agent. The hypothesis tested here is that PAR induced myocardial dysfunction may be attributed to altered mechanisms of Ca(2+) transport which are in turn possibly linked to oxida...

Among the four protease-activated receptors (PARs), PAR-1 plays an important role in normal lung functioning and in the development of lung diseases, including fibrosis. We compared the expression and functional activity of PARs in normal and fibrotic human lung fibroblasts. Both normal and fibrotic cells express PAR-1, -2, and -3, with PAR-2 showing the lowest level. There was no significant d...

Protease-activated receptor-1 (PAR-1) is a key player in melanoma metastasis with higher expression seen in metastatic melanoma cell lines and tissue specimens. cDNA microarray and Western blot analyses reveal that the gap junctional intracellular communication molecule connexin 43 (Cx-43), known to be involved in tumor cell diapedesis and attachment to endothelial cells, is significantly decre...

The effects of the inoculum, pH, cation concentrations, and different lots of commercial media on the in vitro susceptibility of Clostridium difficile to fidaxomicin were examined. Of the factors evaluated, only pH alterations influenced the activity of fidaxomicin against C. difficile, noticeably reducing its activity at higher pH (> or =7.9).

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. cv Bragg) was grown throughout its life cycle at 330, 450, and 800 microliters CO(2) per liter in outdoor controlled-environment chambers under solar irradiance. Leaf ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase) activities and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) levels were measured at selected times after planting. Growth under the high CO(2) levels reduced the e...

Submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) is an important component of shallow water estuarine systems that has declined drastically in recent decades. SAV has particularly high light requirements, and losses of SAV have, in many cases, been attributed to increased light attenuation in the water column, frequently due to coastal eutrophication. The desire to restore these valuable habitats to their hi...

Prostate apoptosis response 4 (par-4) is a recently identified gene that encodes a transcription factor, Par-4, with a leucine zipper domain. Par-4 protein is constitutively expressed in various cell lines and is functionally required but not sufficient for apoptosis. Induction of Par-4 in cultured cells is found exclusively during apoptosis, and ectopic overexpression of Par-4 enhances the pot...

Protease-activated receptors (PARs) are widely expressed throughout the respiratory tract, and PAR(2) has been investigated as a potential drug target for inflammatory airway diseases. The primary focus of this study was to determine the extent to which PAR(2)-activating peptides modulate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced airway neutrophilia in mice and establish the underlying mechanisms. Intra...

The Drosophila anterior-posterior axis is specified when the posterior follicle cells signal to polarise the oocyte, leading to the anterior/lateral localisation of the Par-6/aPKC complex and the posterior recruitment of Par-1, which induces a microtubule reorganisation that localises bicoid and oskarmRNAs. Here we show that oocyte polarity requires Slmb, the substrate specificity subunit of th...
