Torsion of the omentum is a rare pathology that was described 100 years ago. The characteristic appearance of omental torsion and a review of the literature are presented with respect to a case of primary omental torsion that was causing acute abdomen. Excision of the ischemic omentum is the proper treatment for omental torsion.

PURPOSE To verify the development of blood vessels between the greater omentum and the liver in the presence of distinct liver blood intake blockages. METHODS Two hundred and eighty conventional male Wistar rats were used, divided into 5 groups: control (n=35), laparotomy (n=35); hepatic artery ligature (n=70), ligature of the right-hand branch of the portal vein (n=70); and ligature of both ...

BACKGROUND Milky spots in the human greater omentum are preformed specific accumulations of primarily macrophages within the stroma of the greater omentum. To obtain a better understanding of milky spots in the human greater omentum, the development and the earliest forms of milky spots in the human greater omentum were studied, with special attention to the macrophage population. METHODS Spe...

We assessed the penetration of a new carbapenem antibiotic, meropenem, into abdominal tissues. A single 1,000-mg intravenous dose was administered to 66 patients undergoing elective intraabdominal surgery. Plasma, body fluid (peritoneal fluid and bile), and tissue samples (colon, gallbladder, omentum, stomach, fascia, muscle, and skin) were taken at various times up to 8 hours after administrat...

Background. Reconstruction of intrapelvic defects can be a challenging problem in patients with limited regional muscle flap options and previously resected omentum. In such situations, alternative methods of mobilizing vascularized tissue may be required. Methods. A case of a patient that underwent pelvic extirpation for recurrent rectal cancer who had limited donor sites for flap reconstructi...

Omental adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, nucleic acid content and triglyceride fatty acid composition were estimated on 5 goats in late pregnancy and early lactation. These data were compared with animal production parameters, plasma metabolite contents and milk triglyceride fatty acid composition. Adipose tissue LPL activity and oleic acid content decreased whereas nucleic and...

Despite the potentially crucial contributions of the omentum in the regulation of ovarian cancer metastatic growth, it remains a poorly understood organ. Due to its anatomic location and structural fragility, the omentum presents inherent challenges to mechanism-based in vivo studies. Thus, the availability of an ex vivo omental model would, in part, address some of these difficulties posed. He...
