Background Myths, misconceptions and a general lack of information surround the use of gloves and mittens in extreme cold environments. Objective This study assessed how well an assortment of gloves and mittens performed in a very cold environment. Methods A convenience sample of gloves and mittens were tested in Antarctica during the winter of 2016 using a calibrated thermometer (range: -148°F...

We have developed a versatile strategy to access dihydropyrazoles in highly enantioenriched form. Dipolar cycloaddition of electron-deficient acceptors and in situ-generated nitrile imines proceeds with high regio- and enantioselectivity using 10 mol % chiral Lewis acid catalyst. A variety of dihydropyrazoles that incorporate functionality for further manipulation have been prepared.

A nitrile utilizing bacterium Rhodococcus sp. MTB5 was previously isolated in our laboratory by the enrichment culture technique. It is able to utilize butyronitrile as sole carbon, nitrogen, and energy source. Maximum butyronitrile degrading property of this strain has been investigated. Results reveal that 100, 98, and 88 % degradation was achieved for 2, 2.5, and 3 % butyronitrile, respectiv...

AIMS The aim of this study is to investigate whether protection with rubber or plastic gloves during post-mortem explantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) offers enough protection for the explanting operator during a worst-case scenario (i.e. ICD shock). METHODS AND RESULTS We investigated the insulating properties of rubber and plastic gloves (double layer) within the f...

Strain promoted cycloaddition is presented as a tool for RNA conjugation on the solid phase; RNA-cyclooctyne conjugates are prepared by cycloaddition to both azide (strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition, SPAAC) and nitrile oxide dipoles (strain-promoted nitrile oxide-alkyne cycloaddition, SPNOAC). The conjugation is compatible with 2'-OMe blocks and with 2'-O-TBDMS protection on the ribose...

We report the direct observation of a bent geometry for a nonstabilized nitrile imine in a metal-coordination crystal. The photoinduced tetrazole ring rupture to release N(2) appears to depend on the size of voids around the N(3)-N(4) bond in the crystal lattice. We further observed the selective formation of the 1,3-addition product when a reactive nitrile imine was photogenerated in water. Ov...

To compare the Immediate skm test reactivity ofvanous latex (natural rubber) surgical and cleanmg gloves, pnck tests were performed on 40 latex-allergic persons, 26 of whom were sensitized by surgical and 14 by cleanmg latex gloves. 6/17 surgical gloves tested and 1/2 cleanmg gloves caused positive reactions m almost all (over 87%) of the allergic subjects. In contrast, the frequencies of posit...

The bacterial strain Rhodococcus butanica (ATCC 21197), which exhibits nitrilase and nitrile hydratase/amidase activities, catalyses the enantioselective hydrolysis of racemic naproxen nitrile (R/S)-1 to furnish a moderate enantiomeric excess of (S)-naproxen (S)-3. Racemic naproxen amide (R/S)-2 is not a good substrate for this strain. Resting cells of the newly selected bacterial strain Rhodoc...

BACKGROUND Healthcare workers are at risk of acquiring viral diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV through exposure to contaminated blood and body fluids at work. Most often infection occurs when a healthcare worker inadvertently punctures the skin of their hand with a sharp implement that has been used in the treatment of an infected patient, thus bringing the patient's blood into ...
