Background We studied the comparative effectiveness of biosimilar filgrastim vs original filgrastim in patients with chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. Patients and methods This multicenter, observational study was conducted at 14 centers. The study included 337 patients experiencing neutropenia under chemotherapy. Patients were given either filgrastim 30 MIU or 48 MIU (Neupogen®) or biosimila...

Prolonged neutropenia is generally thought to be the major factor for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). In the present study, we characterize the frequency, severity, and duration of neutropenia that immediately precedes IPA. Prolonged neutropenia was identified in only one third of all IPA cases and occurred exclusively in hematologic patients.

Congenital neutropenia is a rare hematopoietic disease, which occurs sporadically or as an auto-somal dominant inherited disorder. Pathogenesis of congenital neutropenia can now be attributed to mutations of the ELA2 gene encoding neutrophil elastase. A child with severe congenital neutropenia with a heterozygous mutation G1887A in exon 2 of ELA2 gene is reported.

We retrospectively compared the incidence of neutropenia in two groups of HIV patients with lymphoma, who underwent chemotherapy supported by once-per-cycle administration of pegfilgrastim or by daily subcutaneous injection of filgrastim, respectively. Our findings indicate that pegfilgrastim and filgastrim produce similar results in preventing both neutropenia and febrile neutropenia.

Febrile neutropenia is one of the most serious complications in patients with haematological malignancies and chemotherapy. A prompt identification of infection and empirical antibiotic therapy can prolong survival. This paper reviews the guidelines about febrile neutropenia in the setting of hematologic malignancies, providing an overview of the definition of fever and neutropenia, and categor...

BACKGROUND Chemotherapy used for malignant diseases may produce severe neutropenia in first cycle which may compel for dose modification and early termination of therapy. This descriptive cross sectional study was planned to see the frequency and severity of neutropenia after first cycle of chemotherapy comprising cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine with prednisolon in patients of diffus...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The two main complications of severe chronic neutropenia are fatal sepsis and myelodysplasia/acute leukemia (MDS/AL). Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) therapy has significantly reduced the frequency and severity of infections, but its possible influence on the risk of malignancy is not known. DESIGN AND METHODS The French Severe Chronic Neutropenia (SCN)...

Background: Fever in neutropenic patients is a medical emergency which may happen in patients undergoing chemotherapy. The definition of neutropenia varies from institution to institution but is usually defined as an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) < 500 cells/l or < 1,000 cells/l with a predicted nadir of < 500 cells/l. Bacterial and fungal infections are the most important in neutropenic pat...

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) involves the transfer of stem cells to establish hematopoiesis in patients who have received myeloablative chemotherapy with or without whole body irradiation. Following high-dose therapy and HSCT, all patients experience a period of neutropenia. Outpatient care delivery models place expanded responsibilities on patients and their families for the ...

Several congenital disorders may cause neutropenia. The recent advances in the field of molecular biology have facilitated our knowledge concerning pathophysiological mechanisms leading to these disorders. The molecular basis of disorders with defective myelopoiesis (severe congenital neutropenia and cyclic neutropenia) and disorders due to defective RNA processing (Shwachman Diamond syndrome a...
