We report here on multiwavelength observations of the two new soft X-ray transients (SXTs) XTE J1859+226 and XTE J1118+480, which we observed with HST/RXTE/UKIRT. For XTE J1118+480 we also used EUVE since it is located at a very high galactic latitude and suffers from very low extinction. The two sources exhibited very different behaviour. XTE J1859+226 seems quite normal and therefore a good o...

Near-infrared (NIR) Raman spectroscopy was used to measure spectra of dried human blood samples from multiple donors. Two major questions addressed in this paper involve the influence of sample heterogeneity and potential Raman spectral variations that could arise between different donors of blood. Advanced statistical analysis of spectra obtained from multiple spots on dry samples showed that ...

NESSI: the New Mexico Tech Extra(solar)planet Spectroscopic Survey Instrument is a ground-based multi-object spectrograph that operates in the near-infrared and is being deployed this fall at the Magdalena Ridge Observatory 2.4 m telescope. When completed later this year, it is expected to be used to characterize the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets with unprecedented ground-based accuracie...

Using polarization-resolved resonant Raman spectroscopy, we explore collective spin excitations of the chiral surface states in a three dimensional topological insulator, Bi_{2}Se_{3}. We observe a sharp peak at 150 meV in the pseudovector A_{2} symmetry channel of the Raman spectra. By comparing the data with calculations, we identify this peak as the transverse collective spin mode of surface...

Hydration of PbNO3(+) and SrNO3(+) with up to 30 water molecules was investigated with infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy and with theory. These ions are the same size, yet the IRPD spectra of these ion pairs for n = 2-8 are significantly different. Bands in the bonded O-H region (∼3000-3550 cm(-1)) indicate that the onset of a second hydration shell begins at n = 5 for PbNO3(+) and...

One of the most exciting developments in Raman spectroscopy in the last decade has been its application to cells and tissues for diagnostic and pharmaceutical applications, and in particular its use in the analysis of cellular dynamics. Raman spectroscopy is rapidly advancing as a cell imaging method that overcomes many of the limitations of current techniques and is earning its place as a rout...

Infrared spectroscopy is a rapid, nondestructive analytical technique that can be applied to the authentication and characterization of food samples in high throughput. In particular, near infrared spectroscopy is commonly utilized in the food quality control industry to monitor the physical attributes of numerous cereal grains for protein, carbohydrate, and lipid content. IR-based methods requ...
