We report on the formation of UV emitting Si nanoclusters (NCs) in Si, using a two stage Au implantation technique. These Si NCs, with an average size of 2 nm, show photoluminescence at room temperature, over a narrow band of about 100 meV with a peak of emission near 3.3 eV. With emission lifetimes in the range of 1.5-2.5 ns, the transitions seem to come from excitonic recombinations across a ...

Alginate microparticles and nanoparticles crosslinked with Ca+2 ions are frequently employed in biomedical applications. Here we use microemulsion polymerization to prepare alginate nanoparticles (nanogels) using different crosslinking ions (Ca+2, Sr+2, Ba+2) to encapsulate a model protein, urease enzyme (jackbeans). With alginate concentrations of 0.2wt% in the aqueous phase, emulsion droplets...

Anomalous strong resonances in silver and gold nanoporous thin films which conduct are found to arise from isolated metal nano-islands separated from the surrounding percolating metal network by a thin loop of insulator. This observed resonant optical response is modelled. The observed peak position is in agreement with the observed average dimensions of the silver core and insulator shell. As ...

Carbon-based materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Graphene nano-ribbons (GNRs) have been extensively studied in recent years due to their exceptional electronic, opto-electronic, and mechanical properties. We employed the non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) formalism to analyze the electronic and optoelectronic properties of CNTand GNRbased devices numerically. The steady-state and...

ultraviolet waves, because of their short wavelength, have a high energy and considerable damaging effects on surfaces. protection against ultraviolet radiations is one of the finishing treatments done on surfaces exposed to sunlight. the importance of this issue in relation to human health, due to complications such as skin burns and cancer, is doubled. up to now, different materials such as z...

This paper describes Nano-particle based Planar Laser Scattering (NPLS) flow visualization of angled supersonic jets into a supersonic cross flow based on the HYpersonic Low TEmperature (HYLTE) nozzle which was widely used in DF chemical laser. In order to investigate the non-reacting flowfield in the HYLTE nozzle, a testing section with windows was designed and manufactured. The impact of seco...

Trapping broadband electromagnetic radiation over a subwavelength grating, provides new opportunities for hyperspectral light-matter interaction on a nanometer scale. Previous efforts have shown rainbow-trapping is possible on functionally graded structures. Here, we propose groove width as a new gradient parameter for designing rainbow-trapping gratings and define the range of its validity. We...

Friction characteristics with respect to surface topographic orientation were investigated using surfaces of different materials and fabricated with grooves of different scales. Scratching friction tests were conducted using a nano-indentation-scratching system with the tip motion parallel or perpendicular to the groove orientation. Similar friction anisotropy trends were observed for all the s...

Assembly of 3D micro/nanostructures in advanced functional materials has important implications across broad areas of technology. Existing approaches are compatible, however, only with narrow classes of materials and/or 3D geometries. This paper introduces ideas for a form of Kirigami that allows precise, mechanically driven assembly of 3D mesostructures of diverse materials from 2D micro/nanom...
