The purposes of this study were to investigate the impacts of concentration levels of whey protein isolate (WPI) and inulin on the formation and physicochemical properties of WPI/inulin nano complexes and to evaluate their potential prebiotic effects. WPI/inulin nano complexes were produced using the internal gelation method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and particle size analyzer wer...

Based on the optimal proportion of resin and curing agent, an ultrahigh-temperature inorganic phosphate adhesive was prepared with aluminum dihydric phosphate, aluminium oxide ( α -Al₂O₃), etc. and cured at room temperature (RT). Then, nano-aluminum nitride (nano-AlN), nano-Cupric oxide (nano-CuO), and nano-titanium oxide (nano-TiO₂) were added into the adhesive. Differential scanning calorimet...

The topic of this project belongs to focus area #3 of the NSF solicitation: " Micro/Nanoscale Phenom-enology and Metrology. " Nano-structured materials are extremely attractive for applications requiring high strength and ductility. Two such areas are: (1) nano-layered composites for future aerospace applications demanding high strength-to-weight ratios; and (2) next-generation interconnect and...

PURPOSE The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the morphologic characteristics of self-assemblies of diamond (nano-D), silver (nano-Ag), gold (nano-Au), and platinum (nano-Pt) nanoparticles with Staphylococcus aureus (bacteria) and Candida albicans (fungi), to determine the possibility of constructing microorganism-nanoparticle vehicles. METHODS Hydrocolloids of individual...

Molecular combinatory computing makes use of a small set of chemical reactions that together have the ability to implement arbitrary computations. Therefore it provides a means of “programming” the synthesis of nanostructures and of controlling their behavior by programmatic means. We illustrate the approach by several simulated nano-assembly applications, and discuss a possible molecular imple...

We report on the evolution of a hollow sphere secondary structure of spherical nanoparticles by a solubilization-reprecipitation mechanism based on the difference of solubility products (K(sp)) of two different precipitates. Carbon-coated nanoparticles of olivine structure LiFePO(4) served as the primary nano-blocks to build the secondary nano-architecture.

Star-shaped polymers with varying arm numbers and arm lengths are synthesized, and self-assembled into microspheres, which are either smooth or fibrous on the nanoscale, and either nonhollow, hollow, or spongy on the microscale. The molecular architecture and functional groups determine the structure on both length scales. This exciting mechanistic discovery guides simultaneous control of both ...

A critical view on the outcome of research in nanomaterials for electrochemical energy storage devices (batteries and supercapacitors) is provided through selected examples. The nano- approach traces back to the early battery research and its benefits realized even before the nano- term was coined. It has enabled important progresses which have translated, for instance, in the possibility of us...

Nano-structuring of the surface caused by adsorption of molecules or atoms and by the reaction of surface atoms with adsorbed species are reviewed from a chemistry viewpoint. Self-assembly of adsorbed species is markedly influenced by weak mutual interactions and the local strain of the surface induced by the adsorption. Nano-structuring taking place on the surface is well explained by the noti...
