haemoplasmas contain eperythrozoon and haemobartonella species, which are widespread causes of animal and human infections. these obligatory cell parasites were previously known as hemobartonella; now hemotropic mycoplasmas. these bacteria are identified by the lack of cell wall and their small genome. the usual diameter is between 0.3 and1μm. mycoplasmasarepolymorphic and seen in circular or b...

Peptide deformylase inhibitor LBM-415 and seven other drugs were tested against Mycoplasma pneumoniae (100 isolates), Mycoplasma hominis (20 isolates), Mycoplasma fermentans (10 isolates), and Ureaplasma species (50 isolates). LBM-415 was active against M. pneumoniae (MICs, <or=0.008 microg/ml). It showed no activity against M. hominis and M. fermentans and modest activity against Ureaplasma spp.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection usually presents with upper and lower respiratory tract infection. Extrapulmonary involvement is not uncommon, however. We report two cases of predominantly extrapulmonary manifestations of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection without significant pulmonary involvement. Both cases were diagnosed by serology. These cases illustrate the diversity of clinical presentation...

A lymphocyte blastogenesis inhibitory factor, (LBIF), was purified from the culture supernatant of human histiocytic lymphoma U937 by fast protein liquid chromatography. In this study, we demonstrated, first, that LBIF originated from a mycoplasma, Mycoplasma arginini, infecting U937 cells, and second, that LBIF bore the arginine deiminase activity. The implication of in vivo immunosuppression ...

We determined in vitro susceptibilities for ABT-492 and other antimicrobials against Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Mycoplasma fermentans, Mycoplasma hominis, and Ureaplasma species. ABT-492 MICs were < or =1 microg/ml, and the agent was bactericidal against selected isolates of M. pneumoniae and M. hominis. ABT-492 has potential for treatment of infections due to these microorganisms.

The rates of isolation of Mycoplasma species from bronchoalveolar lavages of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients and HIV-negative patients were compared. Mycoplasma species were more frequently isolated from HIV-positive patients. In most cases, a known pulmonary pathogen was also identified. All samples tested negative for Mycoplasma fermentans by PCR.

Monoclonal antibodies directed against Mycoplasma pneumoniae surface components were examined for their ability to block mycoplasma attachment to chicken erythrocytes. Purified preparations of antibodies which recognize the major mycoplasma ligand mediating cytadherence (protein P1, 165 kilodaltons) inhibited attachment by more than 85% of the control values. Monoclonal antibodies reactive with...

Mycoplasmas are responsible for many human and animal respiratory diseases and have a tremendous economic and health impact worldwide. Currently, there is no vaccine against any animal or human mycoplasma species. Despite the vast amount of research, the mechanisms that control hosts' resistance and susceptibility to mycoplasma infection remains unclear. Immune responses, particularly T lymphoc...

Mycoplasma species, which can cause upper respiratory tract disease (URTD), are significant pathogens of birds, mammals, fish, and reptiles. Mycoplasmosis is of high concern for chelonian conservation, with the most well-documented cases in gopher and desert tortoises. Mycoplasma sp. infections have been reported in captive and free-living box turtles ( Terrapene spp.). We documented URTD assoc...

Mycoplasma columbinum is a member of nonglycolytic Mycoplasma species which can hydrolyze arginine. Increasingly research has revealed that M. columbinum is associated with respiratory disease of pigeons and that the respiratory disease symptoms could be eliminated via the use of mycoplasma treatment medicine. Here we report the genome sequence of M. columbinum strain SF7, which is the first ge...
