The host response against foreign materials designates the biocompatibility of intravenously administered microcapsules and thus, widely affects their potential for subsequent clinical use as artificial oxygen/drug carriers. Therefore, body distribution and systemic parameters, as well as markers of inflammation and indicators of organ damage were carefully evaluated after administration of sho...

Microencapsulated dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) healing agent and Grubbs’ Ru catalyst are incorporated into an epoxy matrix to produce a polymer composite capable of self-healing. The fracture toughness and healing efficiency of this composite are measured using a tapered double-cantilever beam (TDCB) specimen. Both the virgin and healed fracture toughness depend strongly on the size and concentrati...

In recent years, textile materials with special applications in the cosmetic field have been developed. A new sector of cosmetic textiles is opened up and several cosmetic textile products are currently available in the market. Microencapsulation technology is an effective technique to control the release properties of active ingredients that prolong the functionality of cosmetic textiles. This...

Chitosan coated alginate microcapsules were developed as oral sustained delivery carriers for anti tubercular drugs in order to improve patient compliance, to reduce dose/dosing frequency in the management of tuberculosis (TB), which otherwise demands prolonged chemotherapy. Alginate–chitosan microparticles encapsulating three frontline anti-tuberculosis drugs (ATDs), rifampicin, isoniazide and...

Cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) microcapsules were formulated to deliver plasmid DNA (pDNA) to the intestines. The microcapsules were characterized and were found to have an average diameter of 44.33 ± 30.22 μm, and were observed to be spherical with smooth surface. The method to extract pDNA from CAP was modified to study the release profile of the pDNA. The encapsulated pDNA was found to be...

The target of a controlled drug delivery system is for an improved drug treatment (outcome) through rate-/time-programmed and/or site-specific drug delivery. Environmental stimuli-responsive controlled-release systems have been developed specifically for this purpose. These environmental stimuli-responsive release systems can release specified chemicals or drugs at a particular site where an en...

The authors have previously designed, developed, and characterized a novel microencapsulated formulation as a platform for the targeted delivery of therapeutics in an animal model of type 2 diabetes, using the drug probucol (PB). The aim of this study was to optimize PB microcapsules by incorporating the bile acid deoxycholic acid (DCA), which has good permeation-enhancing properties, and to ex...

OBJECTIVE To sustain the bioactivity of proanthocyanidins-rich plant-derived extracts via encapsulation within biodegradable polymer microcapsules. METHODS Polylactide microcapsules containing grape seed extract (GSE) were manufactured using a combination of double emulsion and solvent evaporation techniques. Microcapsule morphology, size distribution, and cross-section were examined via scan...

Holey photonic crystal (PC) microcapsules are generated through a combined technique of microfluidic- and controlled-photopolymerization. This versatile route allows the fine tuning of shell structure (from well-ordered nanoporous to single-hole structures with tailored hole size) by etching or by varying UV light intensity, and endowing the PC microcapsules with multifunctional properties.

Common methods for fabrication of polyelectrolyte microcapsules rely on a multi-step process. We propose a single-step approach to generate polyelectrolyte microcapsules with 1-2 μm shells based on polyelectrolyte complexation across a water/oil droplet interface and study the effect of parameters controlling the polyelectrolyte complexation on shell thickness.
