Identifying jets in heavy ion collisions is of significant interest since the properties of jets are expected to get modified because of the formation of quark gluon plasma. The detection of jets is, however, difficult because of large number of nonjet hadrons produced in the collision process. In this work we propose a method of identifying and determining the transverse momentum of jets by me...

The jets observed to emanate from many compact accreting objects may arise from the twisting of a magnetic field threading a differentially rotating accretion disk which acts to magnetically extract angular momentum and energy from the disk. Two main regimes have been discussed, hydromagnetic jets, which have a significant mass flux and have energy and angular momentum carried by both matter an...

I present recent results from LEP which utilize differences between gluon and quark jets to make quantitative tests of QCD. The principal topic is a determination of the ratio of QCD color factors, CA/CF, using either the multiplicity or fragmentation functions of the jets. In addition, I discuss a recent measurement of the rate of η mesons in gluon jets compared to quark jets.

The classic accepted view of the heliosphere is a quiescent, comet-like shape aligned in the direction of the Sun’s travel through the interstellar medium (ISM) extending for thousands of astronomical units (AUs). Here, we show, based on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, that the tension (hoop) force of the twisted magnetic field of the Sun confines the solar wind plasma beyond the termina...

Space resolved concentrations of helium He (S1) metastable atoms in an atmospheric pressure radio-frequency micro-plasma jet were measured using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy. The spatial profile of metastable atoms in the volume between the electrodes was deduced for various electrode gap distances. Density profiles reveal the sheath structure and reflect the plasma excitation di...

Three recent OPAL studies are presented in which the fragmentation process in quark and gluon jets and in identified up, down and strange flavour jets is studied. The first is a measurement is of charged particle, π, η and K multiplicities in quark and gluon jets. No evidence is found for a particle species dependent multiplicity enhancement in gluon jets. In another study leading π, K, K S , p...

Observations suggest that moist convection plays an important role in the large-scale dynamics of Jupiter’s and Saturn’s atmospheres. Here we use a reduced-gravity quasigeostrophic model, with a parameterization of moist convection that is based on observations, to study the interaction between moist convection and zonal jets on Jupiter and Saturn. Stable jets with approximately the same width ...

Motivated by the large number of jets detected by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and by the inverse Compton X-ray emission model (IC/CMB) for relativistic jets, we revisit two basic questions: “If the medium that carries the jet’s energy consists of hot electrons, can we use the physical length of the jet to constrain the maximum electron energy?” and “Why do jets have knots?” Based on the two ...

We report on a study of the time sequence for the appearance of highvelocity jets and equatorial tori in the transition of stars from the asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebulae phase. Jets and tori are prominent features of this evolution, but their origins are uncertain. Using the kinematics of molecular tori and molecular or optical jets, we determine the ejection histories for a sa...
