We encountered a meropenem-resistant, imipenem-susceptible clinical Methylobacterium isolate and sought to determine if discordant carbapenem susceptibility (meropenem resistance/ imipenem susceptibility) was common among different Methylobacterium species. We concurrently investigated whether this phenotype was expressed in the genus Roseomonas, the other recognized group of pink-pigmented non...

The aim of the present study was to understand seasonal occurrence and diversity species meropenem-resistant bacteria in Gumuncheon river receiving effluents from a pharmaceutical industry Seoul, Korea.Water samples were collected Kyoung-gi province during winter (January), spring (April), summer (August), fall (November) 2018. Water plated triplicate on tryptic soy agar plates containing 16 mg...

From January 1996 to May 1999, Project ICARE (Intensive Care Antimicrobial Resistance Epidemiology) received 448 nonduplicate clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa that were reported to be imipenem intermediate or resistant. However, broth microdilution (BMD) confirmatory testing at the Project ICARE central laboratory confirmed this result in only 11 of 123 (8.9%) ...

OBJECTIVES Avibactam, a novel non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor, restores the in vitro activity of ceftazidime against class A, C and some class D β-lactamase-producing pathogens, including those commonly associated with complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs). This randomized, active-controlled, double-blind, Phase II trial (NCT00752219) aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of cef...

Serratia marcescens is a well recognized nosocomial pathogen. We report an outbreak with this organism in 8 neonates in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Seven cases were treated successfully with meropenem after the failure of imipenem treatment. Although they have similar anti-microbial effects, meropenem can effectively treat the S. marcescens sepsis resistant to imipenem.

OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that treatment with cefepime hydrochloride leads to higher incidence of periodic epileptiform discharges compared with treatment with other β-lactams. DESIGN Data from hospital pharmacy databases of patients treated with cefepime or meropenem during a 42-month period (from January 1, 2007, through June 30, 2010) were retrospectively crossed with data from the ...

BACKGROUND B-Lactam antibiotics are still the most common group of chemotherapeutic drugs that are used in the treatment of bacterial infections. However, due to their chemical instability the potential to apply them as oral pharmacotherapeutics is often limited and so it is vital to employ suitable non-destructive analytical methods. Hence, in order to analyze such labile drugs as β-lactam ana...

BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to describe the population pharmacokinetics (PK) of meropenem in critically ill patients receiving sustained low-efficiency dialysis (SLED). METHODS Prospective population PK study on 19 septic patients treated with meropenem and receiving SLED for acute kidney injury. Serial blood samples for determination of meropenem concentrations were taken before, dur...

In a randomized, double-blind clinical trial conducted at 13 medical centers, meropenem (1,000 mg given iv every 8 hours) was compared with the combination of clindamycin (900 mg every 8 hours) plus tobramycin (5 mg/[kg.d] in three divided doses) given iv for the treatment of intra-abdominal infections that required surgery and parenteral antibiotic therapy. At the end of treatment, efficacy da...
