Introduction  Canal wall down (CWD) mastoidectomy has many drawbacks, including chronic otorrhea not responding to medications, granulations, dizziness on exposure to cold or hot water, and tendency of debris accumulation in the mastoid cavity, demanding periodic cleaning. Many of these problems can be solved by reconstruction of the posterior meatal wall (PMW). Objectives  To assess the result...

INTRODUCTION To reduce incidence of residual cholesteatoma following ear surgery; and to reduce the need for second look "open" mastoidectomy using endoscopic mastoidotomy. Ten-year retrospective chart review of 249 primary cholesteatoma cases (1994-2004) with a minimum follow-up of two years. The first objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of otoendoscopy in reducing the incidence of "ch...

A surgical technique for reconstruction of a well-ventilated middle ear space using tragal cartilage has been developed. Our technique was designed so as to secure an atticoantrum cavity and a complement of posterior tympanic annulus with a cartilage. This technique can be utilized in a radical mastoidectomy cavity at an original surgery and at a revision.

External auditory canal cholesteatoma (EACC) is a rare condition with an estimated incidence of 1.2 per 1000 new otological patients. It is often mistaken with keratosis obturans. We discuss an extensive primary EACC with an aural polyp in a male which was managed by modified radical mastoidectomy.

We present a very rare case of a 29-month-old boy with acute onset right abducens nerve palsy complicated by inferior petrosal sinus septic thrombosis due to mastoiditis without petrous apicitis. Four months after mastoidectomy, the patient fully recovered from an esotropia of 30 prism diopters and an abduction limitation (-4) in his right eye.

To date, clinical application of image-guided surgery (IGS) to otology/neurotology has been limited, but a large potential market and numerous applications support use. Such applications include control of surgical instruments (eg, turning off a drill when close to an anatomic boundary), robotic surgery (eg, robotic mastoidectomy), and minimally invasive surgery (eg, percutaneous cochlear impla...

We present a case of cervical necrotising fasciitis in a 56 year old man, secondary to a rare mastoid infection. The patient had coexisting diabetes mellitus and hypertension. He was treated with early surgical debridement followed by neck and chest reconstruction and radical mastoidectomy. Aggressive antibiotic therapy and supportive care was given. He recovered well with minimal residual func...
