Mycoplasma pneumoniae is the causative agent of primary atypical pneumonia in humans. Adherence of M. pneumoniae to host cells requires several adhesin proteins, such as P1, P30, and P116. A major limitation in developing a specific diagnostic test for M. pneumoniae is the inability to express adhesin proteins in heterologous expression systems due to unusual usage of the UGA stop codon, leadin...

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections mainly involve respiratory tract; however, also can manifestate other symptoms by site involved. Extrapulmonary manifestations of M. pneumoniae infection are rarely known to occur without pneumonia. Herein we report a case of a 9-year-old boy who presented with acute cholestatic hepatitis in the absence of pneumonia. Rhabdomyolysis, skin rash, and initial labora...

Antibodies against Mycoplasma pneumoniae antigen obtained by Tween-ether treatment from purified M. pneumoniae were measured by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Paired sera from 19 patients with pneumonia and from 13 patients with acute pancreatitis with a significant rise in complement fixing antibodies against M. pneumoniae were studied. Single sera from healthy 1-year-old ...

BACKGROUND Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) is widely recognised as an important cause of community-acquired lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in children. Pulmonary manifestations are typically tracheobronchitis or pneumonia but M. pneumoniae is also implicated in wheezing episodes in both asthmatic and non-asthmatic individuals. Although antibiotics are used to treat LRTI, a revie...

Abstract Background & Aims: Cardiovascular diseases are the most important causes of death worldwide. There are a lot of different risk factors that increase the susceptibility of patients to cardiovascular disorders. With regard to the possible role of M. pneumoniae infection in triggering and progress of cardiovascular diseases, this study was designed to determine the seroprevalence o...

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is an uncommon occurrence in Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) infection (1-5%) and has been mainly reported in children and young adults. We present a case of SJS in a 32-year-old male induced by M. pneumoniae infection. This patient presented with fever, cough, and massive occupation of mucus membranes with swelling, erythema, and necrosis accompanied by a g...

We report the autopsy findings for a 45-year-old man with polyradiculoneuropathy and fatal acute disseminated encephalomyelitis after having Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. M. pneumoniae antigens were demonstrated by immunohistochemical analysis of brain tissue, indicating neuroinvasion as an additional pathogenetic mechanism in central neurologic complications of M. pneumoniae infection.

Complete sequencing of pJIE137 revealed a backbone closely related to p271A, encoding a novel RepA protein but with a similar organization and up to ∼70% nucleotide identity to IncN plasmids. A region in pJIE137 resembling the IncN CUP regulon is mostly missing from p271A, presumably due to recombination. The class 1 In/Tn and ISEcp1-bla(CTX-M-62) transposition unit in pJIE137 and a putative tr...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a possible risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The association of COPD with the pathogenicity of infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae is controversial. We conducted a cross-sectional study to clarify the association between atypical pneumoniae seropositivity and COPD in a general population. We also investigated geneti...

Med., 1971, 104 (1), 13-18 Three cases of atypical pneumonia with pleural effusion were reported. Two cases were siblings. There was no evidence for tuberculosis or bacterial infection in these cases. There was ...
