Let C be a nonempty closed subset of the real normed linear space X. In this paper we determine the extent to which formulas for the Clarke subdifferential of the distance for C, de(x) := inf I/Y.rll, be< which are valid when C is convex, remain valid when C is not convex. The assumption of subdifferential regularity for d, plays an important role. When x 4 C, the most precise results also requ...
In this paper we define Baer BL-algebras as BL-algebras with the property that co-annihilator filters are generated by central elements. We use sheaf-theoretic techniques to construct a Baer extension of any BLalgebra, that is to embed any nontrivial BL-algebra A into a Baer BLalgebra A∗. The embedding turns to be an isomorphism if A is itself a Baer BL-algebra. 2000 MSC: 08A72, 03G25, 54B40, 0...

The Zeaman-House-Lovejoy (ZHL) model for discrimination learning involves interacting perceptual and response learning processes, with rate parameters v and 0, respectively. This paper describes a number of predictions of the ZHL model for the optional shift paradigm. Kendler and Kendler showed that the proportion of subjects who learn an optional shift as a reversal increases with subject’s ag...
We apply group cohomological methods to calculate the cohomol-ogy of K(n) BP as a K(n) K(n)-comodule, recovering recent results of Hovey and Sadofsky. As applications we determine the Chromatic Spectral Sequence for BP based on Johnson and Wilson's E(n), showing the relationship to some generalizations of the classical Hattori-Stong Theorem and determine the change of Hopf algebroid spectral se...
The M-tree is a paged, dynamically balanced metric access method that responds gracefully to the insertion of new objects. Like many spatial access methods, the M-tree’s performance is largely dependent on the degree of overlap between spatial regions represented by nodes in the tree, and minimisation of overlap is key to many of the design features of the M-tree and related structures. We pres...
