The aim of this study is to isolate a new bacteriophage with lytic effect against several serogroups Escherichia coli that were isolated from different samples submitted the local hospital laboratory. These are main causative agents bloodstream and urinary tract infections (UTIs) among Gram-negative bacteria. Three isolates E. used as host phages wastewater treatment plant. Eight only three the...

A method of preparing the protein coats or ghosts of phage T2 is described along with proof that the lytic action is a property of the ghost. An assay based on the lytic action toward host cells has been developed which permits a rapid evaluation of the number of ghosts with a reliability of +/-15 per cent. The antigenic and certain physicochemical properties of the ghost have been determined.

ShigaShield™ is a phage preparation composed of five lytic bacteriophages that specifically target pathogenic Shigella species found in contaminated waters and foods. In this study, we examined the efficacy of various doses (9x105-9x107 PFU/g) of ShigaShield™ in removing experimentally added Shigella on deli meat, smoked salmon, pre-cooked chicken, lettuce, melon and yogurt. The highest dose (2...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the most threatening microorganisms for global human health. The current strategies to reduce the impact of S. aureus include a restrictive control of worldwide antibiotic use, prophylactic measures to hinder contamination, and the search for novel antimicrobials to treat human and animal infections caused by this bacterium. The last ...

Prophages switch from lysogenic to lytic mode in response to the host SOS response. The primary factor that governs this switch is a phage repressor, which is typically a host RecA-dependent autocleavable protein. Here, in an effort to reveal the mechanism underlying the phenotypic differences between the Salmonella temperate phages SPC32H and SPC32N, whose genome sequences differ by only two n...

BACKGROUND Acinetobacter baumannii is known for its ability to develop resistance to the major groups of antibiotics, form biofilms, and survive for long periods in hospital environments. The prevalence of infections caused by multidrug-resistant A. baumannii is a significant problem for the modern health care system, and application of lytic bacteriophages for controlling this pathogen may bec...

This investigation was aimed to find out appropriate strategy against antibiotic resistant bacterial fish pathogen, F. columnare. This pathogen was found persistently associated with fishes causing columnaris disease and ensuing mass mortality in hatchery and culture system of Sub - Himalayan region. Nine lytic F. columnare phages (FCP1 - FCP9) specific to its fifteen isolates were isolated fro...

Studies of Vibrio cholerae in the environment and infected patients suggest that the waning of cholera outbreaks is associated with rise in the density of lytic bacteriophage. In accordance with mathematical models, there are seemingly realistic conditions where phage predation could be responsible for declines in the incidence of cholera. Here, we present the results of experiments with the El...

Temperate bacteriophages have the ability to incorporate their genetic material in the host’s DNA, which may be utilized by later generations of phage to overcome the host’s receptorbased defences. This effect of temperance can have major implications for the long-term survival of the phages as well as on bacteria-phage community evolution. To study the impact of prophage on microbial communiti...

vB_EcoM-UFV13, a member of the T4virus genus, shows lytic activity against Escherichia coli and effectiveness in controlling the biofilm formed by Trueperella pyogenes, which qualifies it as a promising component of phage cocktails for mastitis and metritis control.
