Many inflammatory and other benign lesions of the lung may imitate carcinoma of the lung, both clinically and r&liologically. Often thoracotomy, and even pulmonary resection, is necessary to rule out the presence of a malignant lesion. One of the rarer lesions that has been mistaken for carcinoma of the lung is a localized infarct of the lung. Neville and Munz1 have reported two cases in which ...
The aim of the present study was to analyze the stem cell marker, Nanog gene, for the diagnosis and prognosis of lung cancer cases, and to study its application in the diagnosis of lung cancer. In total, 100 patients diagnosed with lung cancer between April, 2013 and May, 2015 were included in the present study. The patients were randomly divided into group A (lung cancer) and group B (squamous...
While primary squamous-cell carcinoma of the hand is common, metastasis of a squamous-cell carcinoma to the hand is very rare. It has been reported to arise from carcinoma of the lung and oesophagus and, rarely, from other tumours. We describe a patient with metastatic squamous-cell carcinoma occurring in the first web space of the hand from primary lung cancer, which remained undetected for 30...
The prevalence at death of carcinoma of the lung in miners and ex-miners has been compared in those with and without pneumoconiosis at necropsy. The prevalence of 11.4% in the group as a whole is no greater than that in the male population in North-west England. Carcinoma of the lung was present in 62 (13.1%) of those without pneumoconiosis and in 52 (9.8%) of those with pneumoconiosis. The mea...
Dermatomyositis is associated with various types of malignancy. However, the association of dermatomyositis with lung neuroendocrine carcinoma is rare. We herein report a case of dermatomyositis with lung neuroendocrine carcinoma.
We present a patient with three lung cancers composed of adenosquamous carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Marked response was obtained in squamous cell carcinoma components following chemotherapy, but not in adenocarcinoma components. Even multiple malignant lesions of the lung might have a chance to be controlled by a combination of chemotherapy and surgery.
Recent studies indicate that the abnormal microenvironment of tumors may play a critical role in carcinogenesis, including lung cancer. We comprehensively assessed the number of stromal cells, especially immune/inflammatory cells, in lung cancer and evaluated their infiltration in cancers of different stages, types and metastatic characteristics potential. Immunohistochemical analysis of lung c...
Lung cancer is a global medical problem with a rising incidence and 5-year survival of 5%-10%. The aim of this study was to investigate whether waiting times and delays in diagnosis and treatment of patients with lung carcinoma have any bearing on prognosis and survi- val. The study was performed in the Brezovik Special Hospital for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis. The study included all cases w...
Immunoreactive ACTH was found in almost all tissue extracts of lung carcinoma from patients without clinical evidence of Cushing's syndrome; i.e. 14 of 15 primary tumors, nine of nine metastatic lymph nodes, and four of four metastatic liver nodules contained immunoreactive ACTH. The incidence of ACTH in extracts of other tumor types was much lower. Comparable normal tissues contained no detect...
OBJECTIVE Prospectively assess the performance of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) for differentiation of central lung cancer from atelectasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS 38 consecutive lung cancer patients (26 males, 12 females; age range: 28-71 years; mean age: 49 years) who were referred for thoracic MR imaging examinations were enrolled. MR examinations were performed usi...
