The Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) was the first prototype of a new type of accelerator, the electronpositron linear collider. Many years of dedicated effort were required to understand the physics of this new technology and to develop the techniques for maximizing performance. Key issues were emittance dilution, stability, final beam optimization and background control. Precision, non-invasive...

A new technique for measuring liquid-level utilizing wedge wave is presented and demonstrated through FEM simulation and a corresponding experiment. The velocities of wedge waves in the air and the water, and the sensitivities for the measurement, are compared with the simulation and the results obtained in the experiments. Combining the simulation and the measurement theory, it is verified tha...

Since restaurants often make much of their profits on drinks, it is critical for servers to offer refills in a timely fashion. We propose wireless liquid level sensing glassware to aid in this task. Specially instrumented glassware detects fluid levels via a high-resolution capacitance measurement. A coil embedded in the table inductively couples power to the glasses, and provides a path for da...

Poly(L-lactic acid) is a linear aliphatic thermoplastic polyester that can be produced from renewable resources. A poly(L-lactic acid)-modified silica stationary phase was newly prepared by amide bond reaction between amino groups on aminopropyl silica and carboxylic acid groups at the end of the poly(L-lactic acid) chain. The poly(L-lactic acid)-silica column was characterized in reversed-phas...

Anomalous diffusion in liquids and the solid-liquid phase transition (melting) are studied in two-dimensional Yukawa systems. The self-intermediate scattering function (self-ISF), calculated from simulation data, exhibits a temporal decay, or relaxation, with a characteristic relaxation time. This decay is found to be useful for distinguishing normal and anomalous diffusion in a liquid, and for...

Droplet breakup of many Newtonian fluids is well described by current experiments, theory, and simulations. Breakup in complex fluids where interactions between mesoscopic structural features can affect the flows remains poorly understood and a burgeoning area of research. Here, we report on our investigations of droplet breakup in thermotropic liquid crystals. We investigate breakup in the sme...

54 www.aiche.org/cep June 2008 CEP Because most processes are self-regulating, it can sometimes be challenging to tune a controller for an integrating process. The principal characteristic of a self-regulating process is that it naturally seeks a steadystate operating level if the controller output and disturbance variables are held constant for a sufficient period of time. For example, a car’s...

A colour indicator for the full range of enantiomeric excess (-100%-->100% ee) is presented which is based on visual colour inspection of a liquid crystal doped with the analyte, i.e. the methyl ester of amino acid phenylglycine, providing the enantiomeric excess and allowing the assignment of the major enantiomer.

This note describes a simple and robust procedure for the accurate computation of values of the indicator function along and near the solid material boundary that is in contact with the evolving interface, as is common in crystal growth on a substrate (solidification and vapor/liquid-phase epitaxy). 2004 Elsevier Inc. A novel triarylboron compound, MPB, exhibiting reversible thermochromic dual-fluorescence in solid-state polymers and in liquid solvents was designed and synthesized. The fluorescent solid-state polymer with MPB can serve as a highly sensitive self-reference temperature indicator with a concentration independent feature.
