Flooding-based protocols are a reliable solution to deliver packets in underwater sensor networks. However, these protocols potentially involve all the nodes in the forwarding process. Thus, the performance and energy efficiency are not optimal. In this work, we propose some advances of a flooding-based protocol with the goal to improve the performance and the energy efficiency. The first idea ...

In this paper, we consider networks with multiple unicast sessions. Generally, non-linear network coding is needed to achieve the whole rate region of network coding. Yet, there exist networks for which routing is sufficient to achieve the whole rate region, and we refer to them as routing-optimal networks. We identify a class of routing-optimal networks, which we refer to as information-distri...

In this work we consider the interconnection of islands formed by neighbouring devices in a highly dynamic topology. To allow for high mobility we take offset in a purely wireless infrastructure where all devices incorporate a global and a local wireless communication interface. We consider cooperation as a means to improve the utilization of these interfaces. Furthermore we reflect on the use ...

Network coding is a novel method for transmitting data, which has been recently proposed. In this article, we study using network coding for one specific case of multicast, broadcasting. Precisely, we focus on (energy-) efficient broadcasting in a multi-hop wireless networks: transmitting data from one source to all nodes with a small number of retransmissions. It is known that the efficiency o...

An achievable rate region for line networks with edge and node capacity constraints and broadcast channels (BCs) is derived. The region is shown to be the capacity region if the BCs are orthogonal, deterministic, physically degraded, or packet erasure with one-bit feedback. If the BCs are physically degraded with additive Gaussian noise then independent Gaussian inputs achieve capacity.

We survey a representative subset of applications that use network coding techniques in different environments. We identified two major scenarios in which such applications are used: distributed information storage and retrieval, and content distribution. Moreover, we survey how the inherent properties of network coding can be applied to security and network monitoring, and study existing appli...

We study the network coding problem of sum-networks with 3 sources and n terminals (3s/nt sum-network), for an arbitrary positive integer n, and derive a sufficient and necessary condition for the solvability of a family of so-called “terminal-separable” sum-network. Both the condition of “terminal-separable” and the solvability of a terminal-separable sum-network can be decided in polynomial t...

Network Coding (NC) is a hot topic nowadays. Even though it has proven its applicability to wireless networks, there are still some questions whether network coding is feasible for small devices. To answer this question an implementation of the Partial Network Coding (PNC) buffer scheme is done on a wireless sensor and the results are described within this paper. Originally PNC was presented in...

In this paper we develop network protection schemes against two link failures in optical networks. The motivation behind this work is the fact that the majority of all available links in an optical network suffer from single and double link failures. In the proposed network protection schemes, NPS2-I and NPS2-II, we deploy network coding and reduced capacity on the working paths to provide back...

In this paper, we propose LOCL, a loop coding layer which sits between IP and traditional MAC. Traditional network coding schemes mainly focus on reducing transmissions, while loop coding exploits network coding to reduce link loss rate. We analyze the performance of traditional network coding schemes and loop coding based on a rather general traffic pattern. We find that loop coding is more ap...
