Identification of materials in a scene observed by an imaging spectrometer is a common problem in Planetology. Usually the pixel size is larger than the typical size of material change over planet surfaces, leading to both linear and non-linear spatial mixing models. We propose here an unsupervised approach based on linear source separation to estimate the pure spectra of the components present...

We study the translocation of a flexible polymer through a pore in a membrane induced by its adsorption on trans side of the membrane. When temperature T is higher than Tc, the adsorption-desorption transition temperature, attractive interaction between polymer and membrane plays little role in affecting polymer conformation, leading to translocation time that scales as τ ∼ L3 where L is the po...

The heat transfer model of vertical ground heat exchangers for ground-source heat pump systems is discussed. An explicit solution of a finite line-source model has been derived to better describe temperature response of boreholes for long time steps, which can be easily incorporated into computer programs for thermal analysis of ground heat exchangers. A quasi-three-dimensional model is also pr...

Inquiry into the meaning of life goes back to antiquity from Lao Tzu (trans. 1913) to King Solomon (Ecclesiastes, New International Version). Th ere is also a long and venerable tradition in psychology of exploring the meaning of human existence (Adler, 1931/1958; Frankl, 1963/1985; James, 1902; Jung, 1933; May, 1958) and self-actualization (Maslow, 1962; Rogers, 1980). However, empirical studi...

The use of universities and public research organisations as a source of information is increasing as firms adopt search strategies based on current models of information use. The theory of this paper is that in order to predict companies’ perceptions of the usefulness of such knowledge, their practical experience in technological innovation becomes a determinant, not directly but by enabling c...

This paper concerns the computation of near-well flow in numerical reservoir simulation with unstructured grids. In particular, it uses spherical trigonometry to derive analytical expressions for the flow towards a well modeled as either a number of point sources or a constantflux line source. The expression for the point source representation is based on projections of the grid block boundarie...

We show how to detect and correct for nonlinear phase shifts in a mainly one-sided interferogram of an emission-line source. We simultaneously detect and correct for an out-of-phase emission background from the spectrometer. The method requires two auxiliary spectra, one of a strong continuum source, and one of an emission-line source with little or no continuum.

For a source of Lyα radiation embedded in a neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) prior to the reionization epoch, the emission line is strongly suppressed by the intervening IGM. The damping wing of the so–called “Gunn-Peterson trough” can extend to the red side of the emission line, and erase a significant fraction of the total line flux. However, the transmitted fraction increases with the size...

The components and quantities of atmospheric dusts fallout has been reported to be the pollution indicator of large urban areas. The multiplicity and complexity of sources of atmospheric dusts in urban regions (e.g. industrial complexes composed of a variety of industrial processes, automobiles, construction activities etc.) has put forward the need of source apportionment of these sources indi...
