We have theoretically studied the effect of deterministic temporal control of spontaneous emission in a dynamic optical microcavity. We propose a new paradigm in light emission: we envision an ensemble of two-level emitters in an environment where the local density of optical states is modified on a time scale shorter than the decay time. A rate equation model is developed for the excited state...
Prompted by intriguing events observed in certain particle-physics searches for rare events, we study light and acoustic emission simultaneously in some inorganic scintillators subject to mechanical stress. We observe mechanoluminescence in Bi4Ge3O12, CdWO4, and ZnWO4, in various mechanical configurations at room temperature and ambient pressure. We analyze the temporal and amplitude correlatio...
We find strong influence of final-state stimulation on the time-resolved light emission dynamics from semiconductor microcavities after pulsed excitation allowing angle-resonant polariton-polariton scattering on the lower-polariton branch. The polariton dynamics can be controlled by injection of final-state polaritons at densities below a polariton saturation density of 5x10(8) cm(-2). A bosoni...
1,2-Diphenyl-3,4-bis(diphenylmethylene)-1-cyclobutene can be induced to emit efficiently by aggregate formation, with the crystalline aggregates emitting brighter, bluer lights than their amorphous counterparts.
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are well known for their tunable structure and porosity. Many studies have shown they are promising for various important applications, for which their performance can be further enhanced by encapsulating functional species, such as luminescent guest molecules, within the frameworks. Although numerous MOFs are luminescent, very few emit white light and their quan...
Emission lines from transitions between high-energy states of noble-gas atoms (Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) and ions (Ar(+), Kr(+), and Xe(+)) formed and excited during single-bubble cavitation in sulfuric acid are reported. The excited states responsible for these emission lines range 8.3 eV (for Xe) to 37.1 eV (for Ar(+)) above the respective ground states. Observation of emission lines allows for ide...
Single-component white light materials may create great opportunities for novel conventional lighting applications and display systems; however, their reported color rendering index (CRI) values, one of the key parameters for lighting, are less than 90, which does not satisfy the demand of color-critical upmarket applications, such as photography, cinematography, and art galleries. In this work...
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of a boron difluoride formazanate dye was investigated in the presence of tri-n-propylamine as a reductive co-reactant. The ECL mechanism was studied using ECL-voltage curves, spooling ECL, and accumulative ECL spectroscopy. The ECL occurs at 724 nm by three distinct, voltage-dependent mechanisms of light emission.
Elongated silicon quantum dots (also referred to as rods) were fabricated using a lithographic process which reliably yields sufficient numbers of emitters. These quantum rods are perfectly aligned and the vast majority are spatially separated well enough to enable single-dot spectroscopy. Not only do they exhibit extraordinarily high linear polarization with respect to both absorption and emis...
Experimental results for single-bubble sonoluminescence of air bubbles at very low frequency f = 7.1 kHz are presented: In contrast to the predictions of a recent model [S. Hilgenfeldt and D. Lohse, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1036 (1999)], the bubbles are only as bright (10(4)-10(5) photons per pulse) and the pulses as long (approximately 150 ps) as at f = 20 kHz. We can theoretically account for thi...
