The electronic transition spectrum of ruthenium monoxide (RuO) molecule in the spectral region between 545 nm to 640 nm has been recorded and analyzed using laser ablation/reaction free-jet expansion and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The RuO molecule was produced by reacting laser-ablated ruthenium atoms with N2O seeded in argon. Nine vibrational bands were recorded, and they are ide...

We demonstrate efficient four-wave mixing in low-pressure molecular deuterium without the need for phase matching. We use two laser fields with opposite circular polarizations to produce a strong excitation of a rovibrational transition at a frequency of 3167 cm(-1) . The coherent molecular motion, in turn, modulates a third laser field (also circularly polarized) and results in highly efficien...

We report the first experimental observation to our knowledge of a dynamic transition from modelike patterns to completely disordered patterns in a large-aspect-ratio Nd:YAG laser. Recordings of near-field patterns with an integration time as small as 1 ns allow us to follow the evolution of the transverse intensity profile along the output pulse of the laser.

A new terahertz (THz) source in air based on the bifilamentation of femtosecond laser pulses is reported. This THz radiation is 1 order of magnitude more intense than the transition-Cherenkov THz emission from femtosecond laser filaments reported recently and shows different angular and polarization properties. We attribute it to the emission from a bimodal transmission line created by two plas...

We demonstrate the generation of cw tunable far-infrared radiation by mixing a quantum cascade laser and a CO>(2) laser in a W-Ni metal-insulator-metal diode. The first known spectroscopic application to the recording of an H(79)Br transition near 4.47 THz is reported.

We report on the narrowing of a room-temperature mid-IR quantum cascade laser by frequency locking it to a CO2 sub-Doppler transition obtained by polarization spectroscopy. A locking bandwidth of 250 kHz has been achieved. The laser linewidth is narrowed by more than two orders of magnitude below 1 kHz, and its absolute frequency is stabilized at the same level.

Growth and planar-waveguide laser (PWL) performance of garnet-crystal-films are reported. Demonstration of 70% slope efficiency with >16.5W realized with Yb:YAG, along with the first Yb:GGG and Yb:YGG PWLs. Thickness and performance scaling will be discussed. We have studied the femtosecond dynamics following optical laser excitation of CO adsorbed on a Ru surface by monitoring changes in the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure using ultrafast soft x-ray absorption and emission. We recently reported [M. Dell'Angela et al. Science 339, 1302 (2013)] a phonon-mediated transition into a weakly adsorbed precursor state occurring on a time scale ...

We demonstrate modulation-based frequency locking of an external cavity diode laser, utilizing a piezo-electrically actuated mirror, external to the laser cavity, to create an error signal from saturated absorption spectroscopy. With this method, a laser stabilized to a rubidium hyperfine transition has a FWHM of 130 kHz over seconds, making the locked laser suitable for experiments in atomic p...
