Congenital absence of lacrimal puncta may be an isolated finding or associated with other developmental abnormality. Nasolacrirnal ducts can be absent thus predisposing to the formation of a congenital lacrimal mucocele. Punctal and canalicular agenesis is very rare. Four percent of new patients attending the lacrimal clinic at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK. from 1981 to 1990 inclusive we...
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of corneal epithelial wounding on lacrimal gland expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in the rabbit model. METHODS Rabbits had corneal epithelial scrape injuries, and the lacrimal gland was removed at different times after wounding. HGF, KGF, and EGF mRNA expression was examined by quan...
Purpose Although normal function of the lacrimal gland is essential for vision (and thus for human well-being), the lacrimal gland remains rather poorly understood at a molecular level. The purpose of this study was to identify new genes and signaling cascades involved in lacrimal gland development. Methods To identify these genes, we used microarray analysis to compare the gene expression pr...
BACKGROUND:. The lacrimal gland is un-capsulated, multilobulated secretory gland situated in the lacrimal gland fossa, behind the supratemporal orbital rim. Tumor and Lesion of the lacrimal gland contain 5 to 18 % of all orbital mass. Aims and objectives: To study the incidence and prevalence of tumor of lacrimal gland. To study the clinical pattern with regard to age, incidence, gender distrib...
PURPOSE To analyze the features of lacrimal drainage system obstruction confirmed during external dacryocystorhinostomy surgeries and report the surgical outcomes. METHODS We reviewed the medical records of a total of 769 cases who underwent external dacryocystorhinostomy for primary lacrimal drainage obstruction between 2005 and 2014. Data about detailed location and extent of obstruction we...
While less common than distal lacrimal obstruction, proximal obstruction causes many cases of epiphora. This article examines the aetiology of proximal lacrimal obstruction and considers current management strategies with reference to recent literature. The Lester Jones tube is the favoured method of dealing with most cases of severe proximal obstruction; other methods have been tried with less...
CASE REPORT A 74-year-old male presented with an orbital tumor located in the left lacrimal fossa. Ocular examination showed hypotropia, exophthalmos and palpebral ptosis. DISCUSSION Removal of the tumor was performed by a lateral orbitotomy. The histopathologic study showed a tumor consistent with an adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal gland with apocrine differentiation.
PURPOSE The aim of this study is to present a surgical technique used to treat epiphora secondary to difficult cases of lacrimal pathway obstruction after fractures, previous surgery or anatomic abnormalities. METHODS From January 2001 to December 2002 we treated 27 patients with complicated lacrimal pathway obstruction secondary to fractures (10 cases), previous nasal surgery (4 cases), fail...
OBJECTIVE To describe a modified technique for conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy (CDCR) and to compare this technique with the standard transcaruncular placement of the glass tube. METHODS Patients with upper lacrimal system obstruction underwent CDCR at the Jules Stein Eye Institute during a 3-year period. Thirteen patients underwent modified CDCR leaving the caruncle intact, while 7 patients...
