Class V myosins are a ubiquitously expressed family of actin-based molecular motors. Biochemical studies on myosin-Va from chick brain indicate that this myosin is a two-headed motor with multiple calmodulin light chains associated with the regulatory or neck domain of each heavy chain, a feature consistent with the regulatory effects of Ca(2+) on this myosin. In this study, the identity of thr...

This article compares and contrasts male immigrant labor market experiences in Sweden and Denmark during the period 1985 1995. Using register-based panel data sets from Sweden and Denmark, a picture of the employment assimilation process of immigrants from Norway, Poland, Turkey, and Iran is brought forth. The comparative approach shows that immigrants in Sweden and Denmark experienced similar ...

Four known ginsenosides: ginsenoside-Rb1 (1), Rb3 (2), Rd (3) and Re (4) were isolated from the methanolic extract of the traditional Chinese medicine Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer. Further enzyme reactions and chemical modifications led us to obtain ginsenoside-M1 (5) and synthesize three novel mono-esters of ginsenoside-M1, ginsenoside-DM1 (6), PM1 (7) and SM1 (8) 30 - 50% of yield via a facile a...

Rat liver 5 S ribosomal RNA was oxidized with periodate and coupled by its 3' terminus to Sepharose 4B through an adipic acid dihydrazide spacer. The ribosomal proteins that bind to that nucleic acid were isolated by affinity chromatography and identified by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels. The eukaryotic 5 S rRNA binding proteins were L6 and L19: small amounts of L7, L23', L27/L27', L35...

This paper presents the findings of a survey of 237 high tech small and medium sized businesses based in the UK. The survey is part of an ongoing comparative study of high tech small businesses in the UK and Japan. The paper describes the growth, innovative activity and market structure of businesses studied. Based on characteristics of the businesses and their CEOs five ‘types’ of high tech sm...

This paper studies the impact of trade liberalization in terms of tariff cuts within the Eastern European enlargement on German and Austrian firm productivity. Unique matching of data from 1994 to 2003 suggests that tariff reductions raise parent firm productivity significantly. A ten percentage point decrease in tariff rates can lead to total factor productivity gains of up to 2 percent. The d...

This paper investigates the sequencing choice of a buyer who negotiates with the sellers of two complementary objects with uncertain payoffs. We show that the buyer cares about the sequence only when equilibrium trade can be inefficient. In this case, the buyer begins with the weaker seller if the sellers have diverse bargaining powers. If, however, both sellers are strong bargainers, then the ...

The YidC/Oxa1/Alb3 family of membrane proteins facilitates the insertion and assembly of membrane proteins in bacteria, mitochondria, and chloroplasts. Here we present the structures of both Escherichia coli YidC and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Oxa1 bound to E. coli ribosome nascent chain complexes determined by cryo-electron microscopy. Dimers of YidC and Oxa1 are localized above the exit of the ...

Sabotage in Tournaments: Evidence from a Laboratory Experiment Although relative performance schemes are pervasive in organizations reliable empirical data on induced sabotage behavior is almost non-existent. We study sabotage in tournaments in a controlled laboratory experiment and are able to confirm one of the key insights from theory: effort and sabotage increase with the wage spread. Addit...

The SecY complex associates with the ribosome to form a protein translocation channel in the bacterial plasma membrane. We have used cryo-electron microscopy and quantitative mass spectrometry to show that a nontranslating E. coli ribosome binds to a single SecY complex. The crystal structure of an archaeal SecY complex was then docked into the electron density maps. In the resulting model, two...
