In the title complex, [Co(NCO)(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)], the Co(II) atom, lying on a twofold rotation axis, is coordinated in a distorted octa-hedral environment by four N atoms from two chelating phenanthroline ligands and two N atoms from two isocyanate ligands in cis positions.

Addition of chlorosulfonyl isocyanate to C==C bonds in cis-1,4-polyisoprene and reaction of the adduct with NaOH resulted in the formation of a water-soluble polyelectrolyte with N-sulfate and carboxylate groups. The polyelectrolyte showed anticoagulant activity and it was found, just as with heparin, that the activity was related to molecular weight and N-sulfate content.

Helical polymer brushes with a preferred-handed helix-sense composed of a poly(phenylacetylene) backbone and poly(phenyl isocyanate) pendants are synthesized. The helix-sense of the backbone is effectively controlled by the helical chirality of the pendants, which is triggered by an optically active group introduced at the pendant terminal.

The preparation of substituted pyrrolizines through the Schmidt reaction of acyl chlorides with alkyl azides has been realized. Intramolecular capture of the isocyanate ion and N-acyliminium ion intermediates from the Schmidt process with alkene or alkyne units was achieved, and the efficiency of the conversion with respect to ring construction and bond formation was demonstrated.

Improvements in a method for the specific microscopic localization of antigen in tissue cells are described. This method employs antibody labelled with fluorescein isocyanate as a histochemical stain, the specific antigen-antibody precipitate being made visible under the fluorescence microscope. Two isomeric series derived from nitrofluorescein are described.
