BACKGROUND Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treatment guidelines support the preferential use of portable inhalers (PIs) over wet nebulization (WN) respiratory therapy. Hospital- and community-based educational initiatives and a community-based provincial drug program policy change were previously implemented to promote the conversion of WN therapy to PI and spacer device use in...
Airway hyperresponsiveness to ultrasonically nebulized distilled water in subjects with tetraplegia.
The majority of otherwise healthy subjects with chronic cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) demonstrate airway hyperresponsiveness to aerosolized methacholine or histamine. The present study was performed to determine whether ultrasonically nebulized distilled water (UNDW) induces airway hyperresponsiveness and to further elucidate potential mechanisms in this population. Fifteen subjects with SC...
The anti-inflammatory properties of inhaled formoterol and ipratropium bromide, alone or in combination, were investigated in a rat model of chronic pulmonary inflammation with airspace enlargement induced by cadmium inhalation. At the end of the protocol, cadmium-induced increase of airway resistance was prevented by formoterol (4 mg/30 ml) or ipratropium (0.20 mg/20 ml). Formoterol elicited a...
BACKGROUND Mixing of nebulized drugs is common in real life, but its consequences on aerosol output and granulometry are poorly known. METHODS In an in vitro study I evaluated the effects on aerosol output, drug output, and aerosol particle size characteristics of mixing either beclomethasone dipropionate or budesonide with albuterol and ipratropium bromide. I tested the SideStream and VentSt...
The efficacy of a single metered dose inhaler containing a combination of fenoterol (100 micrograms/puff) and ipratropium bromide (40 micrograms/puff) has been assessed in 12 asthmatics. We conclude that the bronchodilator effect of 2 puffs of the combination inhaler was significantly greater than that achieved by 2 puffs of salbutamol (100 micrograms/puff).
Abstract Background The use of a topical anticholinergic medication, ipratropium bromide, and its ability to inhibit methacholine rhinitis-induced hypersecretion is emphasized. Ipratropium bromide appears be both safe effective in reducing this troublesome symptom. This study designed show the therapeutic effect local treatment on nasal mucosa patients with vasomotor rhinitis. Objective To asse...
INTRODUCTION Although the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is similar between men and women, current evidence used to support bronchodilator therapy has been generated in therapeutic trials that have predominately enrolled male patients. Here, we determined whether there is any significant sex-related differences in FEV1 responses to ipratropium bromide. METHODS Data...
PURPOSE To review the literature to determine whether inhaled ipratropium bromide provides additive benefits to adults with acute asthma who are being treated with beta-agonists in an emergency department. SUBJECTS AND METHODS English-language studies, both published (1978 to 1999) and unpublished, were retrieved using Medline, Science Citation Index, Current Contents, bibliographic reviews o...
