A series of 100 cases of intraocular implants has been considered, especially with regard to the postoperative astigmatism. This was found to be far higher than in a similar series of cases subjected to the same techniques without an implant. The operative results appear to be as good as in any conventional series, except for 2 cases. The reason for the excessive astigmatism (average 2.84 D) is...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW To review the methods described in the literature in the past year (from August 2003 to date). RECENT FINDINGS Techniques for scleral and iris suturing have proven safe and effective to fixate posterior chamber intraocular lenses and avoid the sight-threatening complications of anterior chamber lenses. SUMMARY Scleral and iris fixation have both become well-established eff...

One hundred and seventy one eyes with intraocular lenses were studied to compare the predictive accuracy of the Fyodorov and Van der Heijde theoretical formulae of the Sanders-Retzlaff-Kraff (SRK) regression formula. The SRK regression formula was the most accurate. Our personal calculations of the A constants of this formula are given for several types of implants and manufacturers.

This paper reviews the optics of higher-order and spherical aberrations and discusses aspheric intraocular lenses, attempting to address 2 questions that, despite an abundance of information, remain unanswered: what amount of ocular spherical aberration has been correlated with optimum visual performance, and for what final amount of spherical aberration should the cataract surgeon aim? Finally...

Purpose To report a case of delayed presentation of a severed acrylic single-piece intraocular lens (IOL) haptic fragment causing corneal edema after uneventful phacoemulsification surgery. Observations An 85-year-old male presented with inferior corneal decompensation six months after a reportedly uneventful phacoemulsification in his left eye. A distal haptic fragment of an acrylic single-p...

AIM To assess the refractive outcome of clear lensectomy combined with piggyback intraocular lens implantation in highly hyperopic patients. METHODS This case review included 19 eyes of 10 patients with high hyperopia and axial length less than 21mm. Intraocular lens power was calculated for emmetropia using the Holladay II formula in 17 eyes, and SRK/T formula in 2 eyes following clear lens ...

The new generation multifocal lenses provide the surgeon with several options to meet the specific visual needs and desires of patients. A revolution in presbyopia surgery is being driven by two multifocal intraocular lenses, ReStor and ReZoom. Combined implantation of the ReZoom multifocal lens in nondominant eye and ReStor multifocal lens in dominant eye has been demonstrated to produce stati...

A new testing technique based on the use of a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) is proposed to analyze the optical quality of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs). Different vergences and decentrations of the incident beam can be programmed onto the SLM in order to record the point spread function (PSF) for different object positions. From these axial PSFs, the through-focus modulat...

of high attenuation. The prosthetic lens is also thinner, only about 12 mm thick. It is otherwise in the same anatomic position and orientation as a native lens. These characteristic CT features of an intraocular lens prosthesis readily distinguish it from most diseases of the intraocular lens or a traumatically introduced foreign body within the anterior chamber. It is theoretically possible t...

BACKGROUND Splitting of the lens capsule with a double-ring contour during continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis has not often been reported. CASE An 86-year-old woman underwent phacoemulsification cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation in the right eye. Preoperatively, the anterior lens capsule appeared normal. OBSERVATIONS A double-ring sign was observed during capsulorrhe...
