We developed a hydraulic fracturing simulator by coupling a flow simulator to a geomechanics code, namely T+M simulator. Modeling of the vertical fracture development involves continuous updating of the boundary conditions and of the data connectivity, based on the finite element method for geomechanics. The T+M simulator can model the initial fracture development during the hydraulic fracturin...

The synchronization of unidirectionally coupled multi-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is numerically studied. It is demonstrated that synchronization can be achieved between each transverse mode of a master laser and its counterpart, a slave laser. This result opens the opportunity for multichannel chaotic communications by use of multi-transverse-mode VCSELs. I...

The turbulent processes of a stratocumulus-topped marine boundary layer are not yet fully understood. Among the issues is the relative importance of the effects of cloud-top radiative and evaporative cooling in driving the stratocumulus-topped marine boundary layer turbulence, and in producing cloud break-up. A better way to analyse the relevant observations is needed. Based on the concepts of ...

Scanning oscillator techniques previously developed for transmitter applications have been successfully applied to the receive mode. Scanning is achieved through frequency detuning in a coupled set of local oscillators. The design of a five element receiving array is presented here, demonstrating a 25' scan range. An injection-locking technique is described for low-phase noise applications.

This paper considers the application of LQG integral control theory to a problem of cavity locking in quantum optics. The cavity locking problem involves controlling the error between the laser frequency and the cavity frequency. A model for the cavity system, which comprises of a piezo-electric actuator and an optical cavity is determined in the frequency domain using a subspace identification...

Doering Synchronization of two synaptically coupled neurons with memory and synaptic delay is studied using the Rulkov map, one of the simplest neuron models which displays specific features inherent to bursting dynamics. We demonstrate a trans...

binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) format is deployed where the phase is modulated by either an external phase-modulator or injection-locking methods. The phase limitation and the performance for both phase-modulations including multiple access interferences (MAI) in a shot-noise limited regime are studied and moderate penalty associated with the limited phase excursion is revealed.

In 1921, Brunn showed that injection of neurohypophysial extracts causes a temporary increase in the body water content of Amphibia kept in water. Since then the existence of this water-balance effect has been confirmed by numerous workers, but its mechanism is by no means fully understood. The increase in body water following pituitrin injection might be due either to an increased rate of wate...

Injection locking of two DFB semiconductors opens new possibilities to generate effective signals for optical sensing, in order to reach better performances. Pure wave forms can be generated with qualities exceeding those obtained using external modulators. This is illustrated through the application to the distributed Brillouin sensing that shows significant progress with respect to establishe...
