We undertook a retrospective study of 50 consecutive patients (41 male, 9 female) with an infected nonunion and bone defect of the femoral shaft who had been treated by radical debridement and distraction osteogenesis. Their mean age was 29.9 years (9 to 58) and they had a mean of 3.8 (2 to 19) previous operations. They were followed for a mean of 5.9 years (2.0 to 19.0). The mean duration of t...
Revision knee arthroplasty for infection poses a treatment challenge. The presence of massive osteolysis limits the treatment options in this cohort. Controversy exists in the management of these patients. Direct exchange arthroplasty has provided good results in the presence of infection, but whether this is appropriate in the presence of massive bone defects associated with the infection is u...
Background: Nowadays combined high tibial osteotomy and ACL reconstruction is accepted as a safe and effectivesurgery for patients with symptomatic varus osteoarthritis and anterior knee instability; however, the source of varusdeformity is sometimes the femoral bone. Percutaneous transosseous Ilizarov wiring, whilst preferred in the tibia because of its unique properties, carries a high risk of complications in the femur. The aim of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of a more patient-friendly semicircular pin external fixator module built up from parts of the Ilizarov fixator components and its use in managing diaphyseal femoral nonunions. A group of 2...

We report a case of a mycotic (infected) aneurysm of the popliteal artery due to Salmonella enteritidis. The clinical presentation may be confused with other more common causes of diffuse swollen leg, causing a delay in the diagnosis and proper therapy. Prompt surgical resection of the infected aneurysm together with medical therapy is required for successful treatment.
