BACKGROUND The respiratory movements are one of the factors influencing standing balance. Although well-trained athletes have better postural performance compared to untrained men, it's not quite clear, if the formers' upright posture would be more stable during different ventilation modes, maximal voluntary hyperventilation and inspiratory breath-holding. There are no studies on this subject i...
The effect of respiratory alkalosis on survival in hemorrhagic shock was studied in pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs. Since cell membranes are relatively poorly permeable to bicarbonate ion, production of alkalosis by hyperventilation may influence intracellular pH more than by bicarbonate infusion. Hyperventilation was produced by increasing tidal volume in one group of dogs. Spontaneously brea...
Our aim was to observe the induction of panic attacks by a hyperventilation challenge test in panic disorder patients (DSM-IV) and their healthy first-degree relatives. We randomly selected 25 panic disorder patients, 31 healthy first-degree relatives of probands with panic disorder and 26 normal volunteers with no family history of panic disorder. All patients had no psychotropic drugs for at ...
ALTERATIONS of RS-T segment and of the T waves of the electrocardiogram have been described as a consequence of hyperventilation.5' 13 This, however, is controversial, since such changes were not seen by other investigators,' provided hyperventilation was performed in such a manner that a marked increase of the sinus rate was avoided and the respiration was not so shallow and rapid as to cause ...
The changes in intraocular pressure due to blood pH, PCO2, and PO2 alterations induced by hyperventilation and hypercapnea in man undergoing routine general anaesthesia were studied. It was shown that hypercapnea produces elevation of intraocular pressure, while hyperventilation lowers it. Acetazolamide pretreatment did not alter these IOP responses to PCO2, PO2, and blood pH changes.
Hyperventilation following head injury: effect on ischemic burden and cerebral oxidative metabolism.
OBJECTIVE To determine whether hyperventilation exacerbates cerebral ischemia and compromises oxygen metabolism (CMRO2) following closed head injury. DESIGN A prospective interventional study. SETTING A specialist neurocritical care unit. PATIENTS Ten healthy volunteers and 30 patients within 10 days of closed head injury. INTERVENTIONS Subjects underwent oxygen-15 positron emission tom...
PURPOSE Patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsies (IGEs) often present with interictal spike-wave discharges (SWDs) at rest (spontaneous SWDs), during hyperventilation, and in response to photic stimulation (photoparoxysmal response or PPR). Valproic acid (VPA) is a first-line antiepileptic drug for therapy of patients with IGE. Herein we investigated the effect of VPA on all three types ...
