In the title hydrazone compound, C(15)H(12)Cl(2)N(2)O, the dihedral angle between the two benzene rings is 12.2 (2)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked through inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming forming C(4) chains propagating in [001].

A regioselective efficient synthetic approach to N-imino-γ-carbolinium ylides via AgOTf-catalyzed iminoannulation has been developed. This transformation proceeds via a silver(i) triflate-catalyzed consecutive Friedel-Crafts reaction/N-C bond formation sequence between the readily available indole derivatives and propargylic alcohols.

The title compound, C(10)H(8)N(4)O(4)·H(2)O, was obtained by the reaction of 5-hy-droxy-2-nitro-benzaldehyde with cyano-acetohydrazide in methanol. The non-H atoms of the hydrazone molecule are approximately coplanar, with a mean deviation from the least-squares plane of 0.056 Å. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by N-H⋯O, O-H⋯N and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating a three-dimensional network.
