Background.  Endothelial nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability is impaired in severe falciparum malaria (SM). Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of NO synthase (NOS), contributes to endothelial dysfunction and is associated with mortality in adults with falciparum malaria. However, factors associated with ADMA in malaria, including the NOS-substrate l-arginine, hemolysis, a...

Behcet's disease (BD) has been known for many years, yet the etiology of the systemic vasculitis remains unknown. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthase. ADMA is involved in endothelial dysfunction in various vascular diseases and its level in BD is unclear. This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between ADMA and NO levels in p...

In the mol-ecule of the title compound, C(18)H(21)NO(2), the two benzene rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 58.19 (3)°. Intra-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds result in the formation of one six- and one five-membered ring, which adopt twist and envelope conformations, respectively. In the crystal structure, C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules.

The host–guest complexes of conformationally rigid C-ethyl-2-bromoresorcinarene with aromatic N-oxides were studied using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Unlike that of the conformationally more flexible C-ethyl-2-methylresorcinarene, the C-ethyl-2-bromoresorcinarene cavity forms endo-complexes only with the small pyridine-N-oxides, such as pyridine N-oxide, 2-methyl-, 3-methyland 4-methy...

The results of this study show the quinone-dependent reduction of tertiary amine N-oxides to the corresponding tertiary amines by rat liver preparations. The reduction of imipramine N-oxide to imipramine mediated by liver mitochondria, microsomes, and cytosol proceeded in the presence of both NAD(P)H and menadione under anaerobic conditions. When menadione was replaced with 1, 4-naphthoquinone ...

Tropical nitrogen (N) deposition is projected to increase substantially within the coming decades. Increases in soil emissions of the climate-relevant trace gases NO and N2O are expected, but few studies address this possibility. We used N addition experiments to achieve N-enriched conditions in contrasting montane and lowland forests and assessed changes in the timing and magnitude of soil N-o...

Mangrove Streptomyces represent a rich source of novel bioactive compounds in medicinal research. A novel alkaloid, named 1-N-methyl-3-methylamino-[N-butanoic acid-3'-(9'-methyl-8'-propen-7'-one)-amide]-benzo[f][1,7]naphthyridine-2-one (1) was isolated from Streptomyces albogriseolus originating from mangrove sediments. The structure of compound 1 was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic data ...
