Photoactive yellow protein (PYP) is involved in the negative phototactic response towards blue light of the bacterium Halorhodospira halophila. Here, we report nearly complete backbone and side chain (1)H, (13)C and (15)N resonance assignments at pH 5.8 and 20 °C of PYP in its electronic ground state.

Mitosis in Surirella is described; this organism displays a number of unusual features including an unorthodox method of chromosome attachment to the spindle, and the differentiation of an extranuclear central spindle from a large spherical organelle named the microtubule center (MC). The MC, present during interphase, breaks down at late prophase as the central spindle is formed. Later, the sp...

It is generally accepted that hydrogenosomes (hydrogen-producing organelles) evolved from a mitochondrial ancestor. However, until recently, only indirect evidence for this hypothesis was available. Here, we present the almost complete genome of the hydrogen-producing mitochondrion of the anaerobic ciliate Nyctotherus ovalis and show that, except for the notable absence of genes encoding electr...

PURPOSE To test the feasibility of performing magnetic resonance (MR)-guided trans-septal punctures in the swine heart. MATERIALS AND METHODS All procedures were performed in a 1.5-T MR scanner. A novel, active MR intravascular needle system was utilized for needle tracking and septal punctures. Trans-septal punctures were performed in five swine using electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated high resol...

INTRODUCTION Transseptal puncture is required for many interventional procedures but has a serious complication rate of approximately 1%-primarily related to misidentification of the fossa ovalis resulting in inadvertent puncture of other cardiac structures. We investigated the utility of a full color visualization catheter to correctly position and guide transseptal puncture of the fossa ovali...

A 68-year-old female patient was referred for the evaluation of an incidentally detected asymptomatic cardiac mass. Imaging studies showed a 3.0 x 2.4 cm, well circumscribed, round, cystic mass with a calcified nodule that was attached to the lower rim of the fossa ovalis in the right atrium. Under cardiopulmonary bypass, the right atrium was opened to reveal a well circumscribed, dark bluish, ...

A molecular genetic approach was used to elucidate the phylogeographic relationships of clover grass (Halophila baillonii Asch.) from three key regions within its current distributional range. Halophila is a small seagrass that has historically been only found in few locations Caribbean and Atlantic coast Brazil. In past decades H. also observed Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). Very little known...

Seventeen strains of Herellea vaginicola (Acinetobacter antitratus) and 8 of Pseudomonas ovalis (P. putida), isolated from 23 (6.3%) of 364 samples of frozen, foil-pack foods, were identified and characterized morphologically and biochemically. Herellea was isolated from 17 foods (4.7%), P. ovalis from 6 (1.6%). No Mima were found. The food samples included precooked frozen meats, precooked and...

Seagrass beds are the largest organism-built marine habitat in Dominica, yet have only been surveyed since 2007. Standardized examinations along a depth gradient between 0 and 24 m, focusing on magnoliophyte species composition and benthic cover of shoots at 17 seagrass bed sites, were carried out between September 10 and December 7, 2008. The Cymodoceaceae Syringodium filiforme (Kuetzing 1860)...
