Chronic anterior uveitis following bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccination: molecular mimicry in action?
A 13-year-old girl developed bilateral chronic anterior uveitis following bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination. HLA testing was negative for B27 but positive for DRB1 *0404, a variant of DR4 often associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The authors propose her HLA repertoire allowed for a BCG-induced abnormal autoimmune response by the mechanism of molecular mimicry.
An 80-year-old man with previous intravesicular bacille Calmette-Guérin therapy developed mass lesions of the lower thoracic spine. Metastatic disease was suspected. The patient underwent a course of radiation; however, biopsy later demonstrated fibrosis and cultures grew Mycobacterium bovis. The patient was treated with a course of isoniazid, rifampin, and ethambutol.

A live, attenuated form of Mycobacterium bovis, bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), is commonly used as intravesical immunotherapy for non-invasive urothelial bladder carcinoma. While complications are rare, dissemination can occur. A case of mycotic aortic aneurysm following BCG administration with recovery of Mycobacterium bovis in culture is reported. A review of the published experience with th...
We present a case of acute prostatitis with abscess. The patient had undergone intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy for bladder cancer. A prostate biopsy demonstrated tuberculous prostatitis with abscess. This case illustrates that when bladder cancer is treated with BCG, a tuberculous prostate abscess can develop.
Three different cultures of BCG propagated for over 2 years in a liquid medium containing Tween 80 and albumin were found to differ in several of their intrinsic properties. Cultures of the three strains were found to consist of morphologically heterogeneous populations-each culture being made up of three main colonial types-spreading, intermediate, and non-spreading. The percentage distributio...
