The application of Genetic Algorithm (GA) to the optimization of gain of microstrip antenna, fabricated on ferrite substrate, biased externally by a steady magnetic field, is reported. The fitness function for the GA program is developed using cavity method for the analysis of microstrip antenna. The computed results are compared with the results obtained using GA optimizer of MATLAB.

The Vehicle Routing Problem can be expressed as the problem of designing optimal collection or delivery routes from one or multiple depots to a number of terrestrially scattered customers or cities, subject to side constraints such as time, capacity, mileage etc. The VRP plays a key role in the fields of logistics and transportation. There exist a number of variants of VRPs. Mostly VRPs with fi...

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a relatively recent heuristic search method whose mechanics are inspired by the swarming or collaborative behavior of biological populations. PSO is similar to the Genetic Algorithm (GA) in the sense that these two evolutionary heuristics are population-based search methods. In other words, PSO and the GA move from a set of points (population) to another set...

In molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, force field determines the capability of an individual model in capturing physical and chemistry properties. The method for generating proper parameters of the force field form is the key component for computational research in chemistry, biochemistry, and condensed-phase physics. Our study showed that the feasibility to predict experimental condensed phas...

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are fast and robust computation methods for global optimization, and have been widely used in many real-world applications. We first conceptually discuss the equivalences of various popular EAs including genetic algorithm (GA), biogeography-based optimization (BBO), differential evolution (DE), evolution strategy (ES) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). We find ...

GAs have been successfully used in an aerodynamic shape design optimization. Time efficiency issues related to the evaluation of a fitness are becoming a critical point as large calculations are needed. In this paper two efficient methods are applied to the original GAs to save computational time. Firstly, parallelized GA is used for a single disciplinary optimization to investigate the scalabi...

Genetic algorithm (GA) is proven to be a useful technique in solving optimization problems in engineering. Fixture design has a large solution space and requires a search tool to find the best design. Few researchers have used the GAs for fixture design and fixture layout problems. Either separately (Kulankara et al 2002) or along with FEM, GA has been used for fixture layout and clamping force...

This paper proposes a hybrid genetic algorithm (GA) for electromagnetic topology optimization. A two-dimensional (2-D) encoding technique, which considers the geometrical topology, is first applied to electromagnetics. Then, a 2-D geographic crossover is used as the crossover operator. A novel local optimization algorithm, called the on/off sensitivity method, hybridized with the 2-D encoded GA...

Digital filters have found important applications in an increasing number of fields in science and engineering, and design techniques have been developed to achieve desired filter characteristics. This paper presents an optimization technique for the design of optimal digital FIR low pass filter. The design of digital FIR filters possible by solving a system of linear equations. In this paper, ...

An improved genetic algorithm (GA) formulation for pipe network optimization has been developed. The new GA uses variable power scaling of the fitness function. The exponent introduced into the fitness function is increased in magnitude as the GA computer run proceeds. In addition to the more commonly used bitwise mutation operator, an adjacency or creeping mutation operator is introduced. Fina...
