We describe a range of interactions of maternal intrusion and infant avoidance, based on microanalysis of videotaped face-to-face play between mothers and 4-month infants. After a brief review of our theory of interaction, and approach to microanalysis, we describe the following interaction patterns: facial mirroring, chase and dodge, chase and dodge in a mother infant treatment case, vocal rhy...

In this study we analyze one year of anonymized telecommunications data for over one million customers from a large European cellphone operator, and we investigate the relationship between people's calls and their physical location. We discover that more than 90% of users who have called each other have also shared the same space (cell tower), even if they live far apart. Moreover, we find that...

Melodic properties of turn boundaries in face-to-face and nonface-to-face interactions are analyzed from a production and a perception viewpoint. Results show that although listeners seem to be able to predict turn management in telephone speech when some conditions are met, melodic information by itself is for the most part insufficient to indicate turn transition to conversationalists.

Face and symmetry processing have common characteristics, and several lines of evidence suggest they interact. To characterize their relationship and possible interactions, in the present study we created a novel library of images in which symmetry and face-likeness were manipulated independently. Participants identified the target that was most symmetric among distractors of equal face-likenes...

Experiencing tactile facial stimulation while seeing synchronous stimuli on the face of another individual induces "enfacement," i.e., the subjective illusory experience of ownership of the other's face (explicit measure) and the attribution of the others' facial features to one's own face (implicit measure). Here we expanded previous knowledge by investigating if the tendency to include the ot...

Virtual environments allow us to dramatically alter our self-representation. More importantly, studies have shown that people infer their expected behaviors and attitudes from observing their avatar’s appearance, a phenomenon known as the Proteus Effect (Yee & Bailenson, 2007). For example, users given taller avatars negotiated more aggressively than users given shorter avatars. Two studies are...
