Surface waves in topological states of quantum matter exhibit unique protection from backscattering induced by disorders, making them ideal carriers for both classical and quantum information. Topological matters for electrons and photons are largely limited by the range of bulk properties, and the associated performance trade-offs. In contrast, phononic metamaterials provide access to a much w...

The rotation of the Earth leads to a change in the equation of motion because of the Coriolis force. We study how Earth’s rotation affects elastic wave propagation. We show that the Coriolis force does not deflect seismic rays because the medium that carries the waves moves with Earth’s rotation. However, Earth’s rotation causes a weak traverse component of P-waves and a weak longitudinal compo...

development of ultrasound technique has not been progressing for evaluating the internal quality of fruits as fast as that of processed foods. in this research for quality assessment of pear fruit (shah miveh variety) an ultrasonic measurement system was constructed to transmit and receive the ultrasonic waves. the apparatus included a pulser-receiver, a pair of 75 khz ultrasonic transducers wi...

The problem of reflection and refraction of antiplane shear (or magneto-elastic) waves at the interface between two ferromagnetic half-spaces with slipping contact (vacuum gap) is studied for waves propagating normal to the direction of the applied external magnetic field which is assumed to be parallel to the interface. We show the existence of new waves that are localized near the interface b...

A new perfectly matched layer (PML) for the simulation of elastic waves in anisotropic media on an unbounded domain is constructed. Theoretical and numerical results, showing that the stability properties of the present layer are better than previously suggested layers, are presented. In addition, the layer can be formulated with fewer auxiliary variables than the split-field PML.

A theory for multiple scattering of elastic waves is presented in a heterogeneous plate bounded by two flat free surfaces, whose horizontal size is infinite and whose transverse size is smaller than the mean free path of the waves. We derive a time-dependent, quasi-two-dimensional radiative transfer equation (i.e., two horizontal dimensions with a finite number of vertical mode) that describes ...

In this paper we study finite element methods for a class of problems of nonlinear elastodynamics. We discretize the equations in space using Galerkin methods. For the temporal discretization, the construction of our schemes is based on rational approximations of cosx and ex . We analyze semidiscrete as well as secondand fourth-order accurate in time fully discrete methods for the approximation...

We derive the elastic properties of a cylindrical cloak for in-plane coupled shear and pressure waves. The cloak is characterized by a rank 4 elasticity tensor with 16 spatially varying entries which are deduced from a geometric transform. Remarkably, the Navier equations retain their form under this transform, which is generally untrue [Milton et al., New J. Phys. 8, 248 (2006)]. We numericall...

We compute time-periodic and relative-periodic solutions of the free-surface Euler equations that take the form of overtaking collisions of unidirectional solitary waves of different amplitude on a periodic domain. As a starting guess, we superpose two Stokes waves offset by half the spatial period. Using an overdetermined shooting method, the background radiation generated by collisions of the...

We have investigated various silica zeolites using density functional theory with periodic supercells, plane waves, and pseudopotentials. These zeolitic phases include silica sodalite, chabazite, mordenite, silica LTA, and silicalite. Atom-level geometries, elastic properties, and cohesive energies are presented. Although the zeolites exhibit a wide range of Si-O-Si angles and densities, the co...
