The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is the largest radio astronomical enterprise ever proposed. When completed, each of its 64 constituting radio-telescopes will be able to hold 10 heterodyne receivers covering the spectroscopic windows allowed by the atmospheric transmission at the construction site, the altiplanos of the northern Chilean Andes. In contrast to the sideband-separating (2S...

The current generation of radio and millimeter telescopes, particularly the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), offers enormous advances in observing capabilities. While these advances represent an unprecedented opportunity to advance scientific understanding, the increased complexity in the spatial and spectral structure of even a single spectral line is hard to interpret. The complexity pr...

We describe preliminary results for two ALMA projects – 1) imaging the HCN(4-3) line and H26α lines in Arp 220 and 2) measurements of the dust continuum in a sample of 120 high redshift galaxies to probe the evolution of the ISM masses. The HCN observations in Arp 220 at 1/2 resolution provide the first high resolution imaging of the dense star forming gas in this prototypical ULIRG. The HCN is...

This report describes the results of a test of a new configuration of laser synthesizer for ALMA. The ALMA laser synthesizer is the source of the 1 LO photonic reference, in which a two-wavelength optical beatnote is transmitted by optical fiber from the ALMA AOS technical building to each of the array antennas. It is then used at the antenna as the reference for the first local oscillator, aft...

In the earliest (so-called "Class 0") phase of Sun-like (low-mass) star formation, circumstellar disks are expected to form, feeding the protostars. However, these disks are difficult to resolve spatially because of their small sizes. Moreover, there are theoretical difficulties in producing these disks in the earliest phase because of the retarding effects of magnetic fields on the rotating, c...

We consider using online large margin classification algorithms in a setting where the target classifier may change over time. The algorithms we consider are Gentile’s Alma, and an algorithm we call Norma which performs a modified online gradient descent with respect to a regularised risk. The update rule of Alma includes a projectionbased regularisation step, whereas Norma has a weight decay t...

We present a study of the radio properties of 870μm-selected submillimetre galaxies (SMGs), observed at high resolution with ALMA in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. From our initial sample of 76 ALMA SMGs, we detect 52 SMGs at > 3σ significance in VLA 1400 MHz imaging, of which 35 are also detected at > 3σ in new 610 MHz GMRT imaging. Within this sample of radio-detected SMGs, we measure...

The importance of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to the study of high-redshift dusty gas-rich galaxies is described. ALMA will have dramatically greater sensitivity and angular resolution than existing millimetre(mm)/submm-wave telescopes. Two key areas are emphasized: i) extremely deep galaxy surveys down to flux densities of about 10-μJy, two orders of magnitude deeper than can be ...
