INTRODUCTION The increasing frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae is becoming a serious public health concern. This study sought to determine ESBL frequency in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from patients' blood cultures in two university teaching hospitals of Bamako, Mali. METHODOLOGY During a three-month period, the presence of Enterobacteriaceae fro...

The phylogenetic relationships of Enterobacter sakazakii strains were investigated using 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and hsp60 sequencing. Each analysis distributed E. sakazakii strains among four clusters, indicating substantial taxonomic heterogeneity. The E. sakazakii type strain 16S rDNA sequence was 97.8% similar to that of Citrobacter koseri but 97.0% similar to that of Enterobacter cloacae.

The deoxyribonuclease (DNase) test is useful in classifying Serratia bacilli and in differentiating it from the Hafnia group, E. cloacae, and E. liquefaciens. It is recommended as a differential test in enteric bacteriology because of its specificity, the convenience of its use, and the rapidity with which it can be performed.

The Enterobacteriaceae are environmental and enteric microbes. We sequenced the genomes of two Enterobacter reference strains, E. aerogenes CDC 6003-71 and E. cloacae CDC 442-68, as well as one near neighbor used as an exclusionary reference for diagnostics, Pantoea agglomerans CDC UA0804-01. The genome sizes range from 4.72 to 5.55 Mbp and have G+C contents from 54.6 to 55.1%.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the occurrence of 16S rRNA methylases conferring high-level resistance to aminoglycosides in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from two pig farms in China. METHODS Enterobacteriaceae isolated from 151 pig rectal swab samples and 9 environmental samples were screened for the presence of the rmtA, rmtB, armA and rmtC genes by PCR and sequencing. Conjugation experiments were ...

Tobramycin-resistant burn wound isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae, together with Escherichia coli K-12 transconjugants from these two strains, were examined for plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). All the resistant strains contained a common, high-molecular-weight, covalently closed circular DNA plasmid that was absent in the tobramycin-susceptible E. coli recipient st...

ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumanni, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) pathogens have characteristic multiple-drug resistance and cause an increasing number of nosocomial infections worldwide. Peptide-based therapeutics to treat ESKAPE infections might be an alternative to conventional antibiotics. Histatin 5 (Hst 5)...

BACKGROUND Tagetes minuta has a long record of human use for the treatment of stomach and intestinal diseases. Most drugs used for diseases treatment are less efficacious with side effects and this brought the search for new treatment regimens mainly from medicinal plants. METHOD The essential oil (EO) was extracted by Clevenger's-type apparatus and its chemical composition, antioxidant and a...

Results: Overgrowth occurred on agar with low MIC multiples of ceftaroline+avibactam, but frequencies for single-step mutants were ,10. Most mutants were unstable, with only three remaining resistant on subculture. For one, from an CTX-M-15-positive Escherichia coli, the ceftaroline+avibactam MIC was raised, but the organism had reduced resistance to ceftaroline and lost resistance to other oxy...

The class C beta-lactamase from Enterobacter cloacae P99 confers resistance to a wide range of broad-spectrum beta-lactams but not to the newer cephalosporin cefepime. Using PCR mutagenesis of the E. cloacae P99 ampC gene, we obtained a Leu-293-Pro mutant of the P99 beta-lactamase conferring a higher MIC of cefepime (MIC, 8 microg/ml, compared with 0.5 microg/ml conferred by the wild-type enzym...
