Spatially explicit individual-based models are widely used in ecology but they are often difficult to treat analytically. Despite their intractability they often exhibit clear temporal and spatial patterning. We demonstrate how a spatially explicit individual-based model of scramble competition with local dispersal can be approximated by a stochastic coupled map lattice. The approximation disen...

The purpose of this paper is to investigate empirically the relationship between demand fluctuations and productivity of service industries. Specifically, by using unique establishment-level data on service industries in Japan, this paper estimates production functions for six narrowly defined personal-service industries. In almost all the examined service industries, statistically and economic...

We have developed novel Pluronic/chitosan nanocapsules encapsulating iron oxide nanoparticles. These nanocapsules were produced by dispersing hydrophobically-modified iron oxide nanoparticles and amine-reactive Pluronic derivatives in an organic solvent, and subsequently emulsification in an aqueous chitosan solution by ultrasonication. The resultant shell cross-linked nanocapsules had a unique...

Developing bactericidal coatings using simple green chemical methods could be a promising route to potential environmentally friendly applications. Here, we describe an environmentally friendly chemistry approach to synthesize metal-nanoparticle (MNP)-embedded paint, in a single step, from common household paint. The naturally occurring oxidative drying process in oils, involving free-radical e...

The novel porous Ag2CO3 nanorods were facilely synthesized via a one-pot aqueous solution reaction at room temperature. The crystalline phase and size distribution of the nanorods were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. In addition, the porous feature of nanorods was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nitrogen adsorpt...

Floe formation by cells of Zoogloea ramigera, strain I-16-M, was observed after resuspending pre-cultivated cells in fresh medium. It was considerably stimulated by the additional supply of NaCl or Na2HP04/NaH2P04. Stimulated floe formation occurred also at an increased C/N ratio of the medium in which the pre-cultivated cells were resuspended. The growth phase of the cells had no effect on flo...

Microbial biosurfactants with high ability to reduce surface and interfacial surface tension and conferring important properties such as emulsification, detergency, solubilization, lubrication and phase dispersion have a wide range of potential applications in many industries. Significant interest in these compounds has been demonstrated by environmental, bioremediation, oil, petroleum, food, b...

We propose a mechanism for a velocity-selective device which would allow packets of cold atoms traveling in one direction through a pulsed optical lattice to pass undisturbed, while dispersing atoms traveling in the opposite direction. The mechanism is generic and straightforward: for a simple quantum kicked rotor pulsed with unequal periods, the quantum suppression of momentum diffusion (dynam...

It is demonstrated numerically that smooth three degrees of freedom Hamiltonian systems that are arbitrarily close to three-dimensional strictly dispersing billiards (Sinai billiards) have islands of effective stability, and hence are nonergodic. The mechanism for creating the islands is corners of the billiards domain.

Habitat heterogeneity is considered an important mechanism influencing diversity patterns in spatially structured habitats. However, spatial heterogeneity is not static and it can change along temporal scales. These changes, whether gradual or rapid, have the potential of forcing species extinctions or facilitating the introduction of nonnative species. Here, we present modeling results that sh...
