human visceral and ocular toxocariasis can occasionally be a serious or life-threatening condition, especially for children. the diagnosis and confirmation of the disease mostly based upon serological tests. the purpose of the present study was to evaluate somatic antigen with regard to its application in a routine diagnostic laboratory test. using gel-filtration chromatography, fraction no.1 o...

Liquid array technology has previously been used to show proof of principle of a multiplexed nonstructural protein serological assay to differentiate foot-and-mouth disease virus-infected and vaccinated animals. The current multiplexed assay consists of synthetically produced peptide signatures 3A, 3B, and 3D and the recombinant protein signature 3ABC in combination with four controls. To deter...

BACKGROUND The serological diagnosis of avian influenza (AI) can be performed using different methods, yet the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test is considered the 'gold standard' for AI antibody subtyping. Although alternative diagnostic assays have been developed, in most cases, their accuracy has been evaluated in comparison with HI test results, whose performance for poultry has not bee...

A positive serological diagnosis of amoebiasis could be made by immunofluorescence in 66 of 78 established cases, taking a serum titre of 16 or higher as diagnostic: at this level there were no false positives among 94 control sera. The test is simple and may be carried out on amoebic smears stored for several months in 2-octanol. The serological activity is largely confined to the IgG immunogl...

We present a case of probable tuberculous meningitis in which serological changes 'diagnostic' of herpes simplex encephalitis were found. Evidence is provided that the serological changes in this case represent a true false positive, and that reliance on clinical plus serological criteria to diagnose herpes simplex encephalitis could result in failure to diagnose and treat tuberculous meningitis.

Introduction The year 2006 represented the centenary of the first diagnostic serological test, the Wasserman complement fixation test for the diagnosis of syphilis. In this article I will relate some developments I have observed in the day-to-day running of a diagnostic serology laboratory over the thirty years preceding this centenary. I have assumed some background knowledge and elected to di...

Toxoplasma gondii causes congenital toxoplasmosis in newborns resulting with fetal anomalies. Determining the initiation time of infection is very important for pregnant women and current serological assays have drawbacks in distinguishing the recently acute toxoplasmosis. Diagnosis of recently acute infection may be improved by using stage specific antigens in serological assays. In the presen...

There are several types of immunological tests available for the diagnosis and management of Helicobacter pylori infection. Most commercially available serological kits use the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test format. Originally the kits used crude antigen preparations although many of the newer kits use a more purified antigen preparation, with often increased specificity but low...

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) are the serological hallmark of some idiopathic systemic vasculitides, such as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and, to a lesser extent, Churg-Strauss syndrome (CCS), the so-called ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV). ANCA were first detected by immunofluorescence (IIFT), subsequently the target antigens myelopero...
